#1Musicals I would like to see revived
Posted: 8/26/10 at 9:50pmOf the newer musicals, I would love to see "Side Show" revived because I didn't see the original production but have enjoyed listening to the o.c.cd. There are three older musicals that I hope to encourage potential producers to revive. First of all, "Greenwillow" by Frank Loesser as a loving tribute to this remarkable composer-lyricist in his centennial year. It is a show that epitomizes what Mr. Loesser stood for--moving an audience emotionally without being overly sentimental, in addition to having a gorgeous score. Secondly, "The Happy Time," which has one of the best Kander and Ebb scores ever written and a wonderful book by N. Richard Nash that touched me deeply when I saw the Signature Theatre of Arlington, VA's production in 2008. Finally, one of the most delightful but short-lived musicals of the late 1960's, "Darling of the Day," which has a charming score by Jule Styne and E.Y. Harburg and a marvelous revised book by Erik Haagensen, who also is a regular contributor to "Back Stage."
