What about the "Gypsy" movie starring Rosilind Russell? Russell commands the screen until she opens her mouth to sing with that awful dubbing job. But than that, the movie is okay.
No one has mentioned the FANTASIKS film. What a total mess. I really wanted to like it but, Mother of Pearl, it was a totally inexcusable waste of film and time.
I never even knew there WAS a FANTASTIKS film!
Honestly, there wasn't

Actually, there are two film versions of FANTASTICKS.
One a recently filmed production, very badly done I understand.
The other a long-ago TV version I remember seeing. That has not seen the light of day since first aired, I believe.
That's a musical worth filming. Forget about refilming classic film musicals. Imagine the other new creative projects that could be realized with the millions it would take to refilm OKLAHOMA for example.

Just when you thought no one could top that horrible Chorus Line desecration... we dimmly remember that there was a little seen and much reviled film version of "A LITTLE NIGHT MISIC" -- with the terrifying late 70's pre-dame Elizabeth as Desiree. When Len Cariou sang of her, "If she'd only been faded, if she'd only been fat..." it was pure evil. Diana Rigg was actually very good in it...

IRMA and CHORUS LINE have to top the list in recent memory. Listing to IRMA presently. Wonderful melodies, smart lyrics, none of which used except for a small throw-away tidbit Shirley sings on top of a pool table. Shame on you, Andre' Previn!
If you haven't heard IRMA...give a listen. I predict you'll be enthralled.
Yours for a Broadway full of IRMAS! Wait a minute. It is.
