Lizzie, did Kim always kill herself at the end, despite the song changes? Or was that always a given?

Not Lizzie, of course, but in answer to your question I believe it was always a given that Kim kills herself at the end.

During the revival of "Annie","We'd :Like to Thank You" was dropped (which must have been a recent change when I saw it, because the song was still listed in the Playbill).

On a side note: I had standing room, and I remember seeing Thomas Meehan behind me taking notes on the show.

Yes, MISS SAIGON has always ended with Kim's suicide. The story is modern version of the opera MADAME BUTTERFLY where the leading character also kills herself in the end so it comes from there.
