so yeah it's one of those days

okay, so i want musicals that either have no dancing or the leads don't dance...or random movement, but nothing super intense.....like for example, in My Fair Lady, the ensemble dances a lot, but Eliza (and Henry and others) don't dance...

My Fair Lady
42nd Street (no dancing for Dorothy Brock)
110 in the Shade
Annie Get Your Gun (Annie and Frank don't dance nearly as much as the ensemble does)
Avenue Q
Beauty and the Beast (no dancing for Belle and the Beast)
Children of Eden
Into the Woods
Les Miz
Man of La Mancha
My Fair Lady
Spamalot (the ensemble dances a lot, but none of the leads are going crazy dancing)
Spelling Bee
Sound of Music
Urinetown (no dancing for Hope, Bobby Strong, or Officer that much)
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
1776
Company

of course this list is not to convince myself that i shouldn't take anymore dance classes haha, but please people add to it to give me reassurance that i'm not doomed just because i'll never be in A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity, or Chicago (of course all shows charlotte d'amboise has been in lol).....

I just have to point out that dance played a significant part in the original Company re: Musicals with no/minimal dancing or where the leads don't dance (and I miss that re: Musicals with no/minimal dancing or where the leads don't dance )

Lead or no lead, I think actors should still take basic dance lessons.

I mean, it can't hurt! re: Musicals with no/minimal dancing or where the leads don't dance

oh yeah, totally agree. even the leads need to know their right foot from their left! but good to know that there are still starring opps for the singer/actors who move (not dance) well lol

The dance was quite creative and clever, but rather simple, no? Bennett staged it as if it were something like a Dinner Theatre show.

Eric, wasn't most of the dancing in Company minimal for the leads (except for Mckechnie, or course). I remember Bennett saying something in a book (Sondheim and Co., I think?) that he had to choreograph for 13 non-dancers.

^Uh, unless you're talking about another Hairpsray that I'm not familar with, doesn't Tracy Turnblad dance a lot in the show?

Yes and no--from what I've seen and read. Bennett had some troubles cuz he had to learn how to choreograph for 13 non-dancers--still there's a lot of important movement in the original production--which tells a lo t about character (Chapin in his book on Follies says it was watching Bennett's work in Company that made him realize how important dance could be in musicals). Side By Side was all movement--simple steps but it left people liek Stritch (who didn't care for Bennett) winded. Drive a Person Crazy had notoriously brilliant and FAST choreography, there was for a while in rehearsals (and out of town?) a sort of ballet in Act I--to call the original production a non dancing show (except for Tick Tock) would--IMHO anyway--be wrong. It was enough that actors complained abotu some of the numbers (however you're right--it could count as one that someone without much dance training could do)

Also, in 42nd Street, Julian does little dancing. "Lullabye of Broadway" maybe, but that's it. Such a great role.

Okay, so there's plenty of shows where the principsls dont dance, but unless you're planning on doing nothing but revivals during your career, it wouldnt hurt to get in there and learn some basic dance. Face it: shows these days are more and more integrated, and -- especially with directors like Doyle -- performers are *expected* to be capable of multi-tasking as much as possible. Yes, you have a specialty, but you also need to know how to cover yourself with as many possibilities as possible. And if you really think you're walking into "leading lady" roles, I imagine most people will roll their eyes and smile sweetly and say "Bless your heart, darlin'..."

So go learn some basic dance and some basic movement, and just make it one more thing you can put in your bag of tricks for the next audition.

yeah, i totally agree! and fortunately, i do dance and i'm a perfectly competent dancer....just not a dancer FIRST....if i went to a call for dancers who sing, no singers who dance, i wouldn't do well simply because i'd be competing with NYC ballet people and whatnot....and i'm most certainly not that...but yeah, i definitely am continuing dancing and everything. of course! and i agree about having as many skills as possible. even though i am not a huge fan of Doyle's production concept of the instrument, i am grateful that i have a lot of years of piano on my belt!

What about FAME? Like, NOBODY dances in that.

The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.
