Musicals: The Definitive Illustrated Story

I was checking out this new coffee-table book in the bookstore yesterday. It's a beautifully illustrated book from DK Books, the UK publisher of many gorgeous reference books, and it's a chronological history of stage and movie musicals. It has a bit of a British bias, but as I leafed through it I was astonished at the photo choices for some of the shows: Lucille Ball in Mame instead of Angela Lansbury; two photos of Elizabeth Taylor in A Little Night Music (including one hilarious one of Sondheim with a fixed smile on his face while Liz no doubt massacres one of his songs in the recording studio) but no Glynis Johns; Barbra Streisand but no Carol Channing in Hello Dolly.

Back on the shelf it went.
