I figured since this one has seemed to have gotten a lot of different reactions, I figured I might as well post my own review of this afternoon's show:

Hey, just adding my two cents on a couple of things. I saw the show this afternoon, got the tickets on TDF, sat all the way on the end of the second to last row, but I do have to give the Virginia theatre credit. Usually I detest being so far, but I didn't really mind it this time. I was in row P, and the mezzanine didn't seem to go so high as others, so that was a plus, so I thought the seats were fine.

Okay, first time seeing Sutton Foster ever and gotta say I loved her. Her voice surprised me, as she was usually pretty deep it seemed most of it but then would just reach these high notes so great range. I also just loved the classic tomboyish she played Jo with, the voice sometimes. Very glad I got the chance to see her.

Maureen McGovern-I could see where people would say she was underused, but gotta admit she had an awesome voice. Her and Sutton's scene in the attic really moved me(until too many people started crying too loudly and just ruined the moment for me). I'd love to see her in more Broadway heavy-singing rules, she'd certainly be great!

I agree on Megan, I really loved her Beth. I also agree that Meg just happens to be a boring role, with the material, I'm just not sure Jenny could have done much more. As for Amy...well first off, she's my favorite character(I'm the youngest, what can I say). I think this book didn't develop her character as well as the book or movies, now I don't remember everything, but didn't Amy burn Jo's manuscript for a totally different reason, like because Jo was teaching her or something? That bothered me, it seemed more uncalled for in the situation. But I do have to admit I really liked Amy(the actress) especially at the stage door. See I'm 5'0" so I was like I love your height and we were cheering on short people and high-fived each other. Haha, midgets rule the world!

Oops almost forgot Laurie which was one of the reasons I decided to add my own post...now I had the regular Laurie, not the understudy. I thought I mean he was kind of goofy but from what you guys said, his singing seemed much better than the understudy, I really liked his singing. One problem I had with him though. He really seemed just too gay to be into Jo or Amy. I always love Jo and Laurie and whenever I get to the part where they don't end up together I get sad but this time I was just like duh! he's hiding something. Oh well.

All in all, I just think it was a difficult thing to make into a musical, being so plot-driven as previously stated, I agree the songs could have been more memorable, but I don't really think they did a terrible job considering the circumstances. The story itself is still just so great, and I really enjoyed myself. I wouldn't recommend it for say a tourist and hasn't seen much else but for all you theatre buffs who go to lots of shows, definitely stop by the Virginia Theatre for this one!

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have to step up for Danny Gurwin. I've seen him in A Little Night Music and in Little Women - he does "Little" shows - and he just didn't come across as gay to me, just boyish and a bit goofy which was appropriate for the roles.

Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

wickedrentq, I LOVE your siguature. haha. And I'm procastinating right now so it's a nice swift kick in the ass.

I've decided to go see it. Love Sutton, love the bits of Maureen that I've heard. And the novel is one of my all time favorites. But so much of the time, it the music isn't great then I lose interest. Nice review!
