And the orphans can hold up a giant banner that says, "Ladies and Gentleman: Ms. Patti LuPone" a la Candide.

Posted: 11/16/05 at 3:11pmMy Patti Lupone dream, indeed fantasy, is that she begin to enunciate every word. Sloppiest diction this side of a stroke clinic.

I will agree with her ennunciation issues...However, she's doing fabulous in Sweeney right now. Only a few times throughout the show did she have "issues".

I think the problem is that people LISTEN differently.

wow this message is really funny because, i just got cast as Ms. Hannigan in Annie. Patti would be awesome in that role, i think she would have made an amazing Grace in her youth.
I have no problem with her diction.

Her diction?
Listen to the last minute or so of Buenos Aires from Evita when she jumbles up all of those Spanish words. That's why she's horrible at diction.
Or at least was...hasn't been bad lately.

Granted, the end of Buenos Aires spanish section is a little blurry, but I can understand her every word in any recording of hers I have (I think I'm missing just one). AND - I was part of the Sweeney Todd concerts in NYC and even sitting behind her in the chorus, I heard/understood every word.
I think because she's been parodied so much, this diction thing has taken on a life of its own. But I guess when you're a star, people are going to take shots at you.

Yes I totally agree with you JBSinger. I can most always understand every word she sings. I think the problem is, as a belter, her mouth has to be so open to let the sound out strongly. This is probably why her vowels are so wide.
