Hello. I had a very nice time in NYC. Here are some of my musings about my time in the Big Apple and some of the shows I saw.
Fri. Dec. 22: Chicago: I had my usual spot in the front row. To my surprise, Mary Claire King had the role as Velma Kelly. She was amazing. So much energy and sass. The audience was kind of subdued. There was a long line outside of the theatre. It truly is a worldwide phenomenon. I had a chance to chat briefly with Ryan Lowe (Mary Sunshine). It's always nice to revisit Chicago
Sat. Dec. 23rd: I looked at this day with a small measure of trepidation. I had a 5 p.m. show for Titanique. I made sure that I had plenty of time to get to the Daryl Roth Theatre on East 15th. I wasn't familiar with the area, so I would up walking quite a bit to get to the theatre. There was a very loud demonstration as I got closer to Bryant Park. I had a pleasant experience with Titanique. The performers had so much energy! Michael Williams was amazing as Jack Dawson. Anne Fraser Thomas was incredible as Molly Brown. Her rendition of "All By Myself"was out of this world. It was a funny show to be sure, but I guess I was unable to appreciate the humor in the show. Now...after the show ended, I made a beeline for the door. I ran out, cut across Bryant Park and went to 14th Street. My goal was to get to the 7th Ave stop for the 1 Red Line. I walked fast and ran part of the way. I got to the correct stop and got off at the 50th Street Station. I ran towards 49th St. to get to the Ambassador Theatre. This must have been about 7:15 p.m. The line stretched all the way to 8th Ave. This Saturday crowd was more energetic. Kimberly Marable returned to her role as Velma. I had a great time seeing her for the first time. Marty Lawson played the role of Aaron. After the show, I chatted a bit with Ryan and got to meet Kimberly Marable. She stayed outside for quite a bit taking pictures with fans. The stage door wasn't really crowded.
Sunday, December 24th: I had a 10 a.m. show for the Xmas Spectacular. I had seen it before. I loved seeing the Rockettes. I got back to my hotel to rest a bit, as I had a 2:00 p.m. show "Harmony". I got there early and do my best Eve Harrington imitation. I had a chance to see Sierra Boggess enter the theatre together with Chip Zien. I gave Julie Benko a small picture book of Golda Meir. She liked that. It was truly a moving experience seeing "Harmony". Julie and Sierra were wonderful! I loved the segment with Josephine Baker. I hope Chip Zien gets a Tony nomination for his role. Orchestra seemed full, with a few empty seats here and there. It's too bad that a show like Harmony is not doing better box office.
