What's Emo?

Hey, I've been looking forward to hearing your take on the show.

In some respects I agree with you: as I said before, the performances are indeed full-on and the lad playing Moritz is truly impressive. Individually, there are many likeable elements. What, though, is the show's message? I still don't get it?

It's funny you pick up on Hanschen- several friends have really taken exception to the way this character is portrayed as overly predatory/ manipulative and also that the "Going to Wound You" is played almost as mocking comic relief- the gay characters as a parody of the heterosexual couple whose feelings should actually be respected.

But there you are. It's not often our tastes diverge so thoroughly, is it? How was the house?

That's true Dev. I've read your posts on Cabaret and wished you had directed that production.

The stalls were 90% full but I forgot to see if they'd closed the balcony or not. There was a vociferous reception and three curtain calls but only about 30% of us were on our feet.

The show's message is that sexual education as done through religious institutions does far more damage than good. But it doesn't give any easy answers either. We think Melchi has the answers part-way thro' Act I but in Act II we also see that his answers also cause their own problems. So it leaves the audience to work things out for themselves.

With Hanschen, it doesn't bother me that he's played a bit predatory or even comically; what does bother me is that every character (Ernst excepted, obv) is so revolted by him. It wasn't even in the original play, so there's not much of an excuse for it.

I love how people say "it's so not relevant to our times!". Um, hello? How is the "abstinence-only sex ed DOESN'T WORK" moral *not* relevant to the present day? O_O

Anyhoo. I rather liked it on Broadway, liked it heaps better in the West End, and if we *did* have a mafia here, we'd never admit to it. Never heard of omerta? :P
