Well, today is my birthday and each year, I go to New York to celebrate. We left on Friday and got back today. We managed to squeeze in five shows in the three days we were there, so, here we go:
First was "Avenue Q." Full cast, no understudies, laughed til my sides hurt. I have the CD, so I knew all the songs, but, for some reason, they were so much funnier live. Ann Harada is a genius. The cast looks like they're having so much fun and they were all perfection. Loved it and never wanted it to end.
On Saturday, we got rush tickets for "Caroline, Or Change." It was definitly a different experience. Tonya Pinkins was in top form, her voice sounded great. It took me a little bit to start to get into the show because I had to get used to the style. I appreciate it more now than I did while I was watching it because I've had time to really reflect on it. Full cast for this show, too. Harrison Chad was a little obnoxious and he was really reaching for those high notes, but he served his purpose. Anika Noni Rose was fantastic, but, to tell the truth, I liked Chandra Wilson as Dotty better. Veanne Cox is absolutely wonderful. "Lot's Wife" was breathtaking. There wa so much emotion and Pinkins sung it beautifully. It was a spectacular moment. I'd also like to mention the set, which is simple, yet effective. I'm really glad I caught this show.
Saturday evening, we got last minute tickets to "Little Shop of Horrors." As soon as the music began I thought, "Why aren't there more people in this theatre?!" The show is so much fun. The three girls (Dana Dawson was in for Ronnette) are just awesome. I was impressed by Joey Fatone. I saw Hunter Foster in December and he was excellent. Fatone played the role a little differently, but he was good. He didn't have a problem with the comedy or the singing. Michael James Leslie was on as Audrey II and he was just as good, if not better, than Michael-Leon Wooley. What a voice! Jessica-Snow Wilson is precious as Audrey. She's cute as a button and has a great voice. "Little Shop" was a nice way to spend two hours.
Sunday, we went to "Wicked" to see Kristin Chenoweth's last performance. It's already been covered, so I won't waste my time. I had a blast.
Sunday evening, we got rush for "Chicago." Paige Davis is fantastic. The first time I saw the show, I saw Melanie Griffith, whom I enjoyed if only for novelty's sake. Davis blew it out of the park. She was having so much fun on stage, you could tell she was really into it. Christopher Sieber was a veryy funny Billy Flynn, and Brenda Braxton has a voice that could possibly bring down the balcony at the Ambassador. Roz Ryan was also great as Mama Morton. It was a great way to end the weekend.
Well, as you can see, I had tons of fun. And if you stuck with me through the whole thing, I thank you.

Posted: 7/19/04 at 11:24pmWe stage doored "Avenue Q" (met everyone except Natalie Bealcon, she had to split to catch her train. they're all so wonderful), "Beauty and the Beast" (we saw the show in May and wanted to meet Christy Carlson Romano because she's sweet and she's gorgeous), Wicked (we managed to get Kristin and Idina on Friday night and then we went before the show on Saturday to give them both flowers and we met Carole Shelly), "Little Shop of Horrors" (got to met everyone, they were all very nice), "Caroline, Or Change" (met most of the principles, Tonya Pinkins is the nicest, most generous woman you'd ever wanna meet), and "Chicago" (we got to meet Paige, Christopher and Brenda). Every single person was very nice.

Posted: 7/20/04 at 6:25pmI don't really know what was so amazing about Anika Noni Rose. She has an awesome voice and did a fine job, but, I may have missed something because I don't completely understand the show yet, I felt like her character didn't do much.
