NY Times Article

There's an article in today's NY Times about stunt casting in broadway this summer. Includes Joey Fatone, Joey McIntyre, Deborah Cox, Christy Carlson Romano, Paige Davis, and Melanie Brown. It said that Broadway uses celebrity actors in the summer to draw the attention of tourists who would be more likely to see a show if it had a big name star.

Just found it interesting because I didn't know tourists were the main reason.

American Idol fans: it also mentioned that Vanessa Oliveras is playing Tracy Turnblad in the Toronto run of Hairspray...ha!

She is, but she's not that bad at all. She's no Marissa, but Vanessa still delivers a satisfying performance. Personally, I think they could have found someone more qualified, and I'm a bit puzzled as to why the producers (Mirvish) would think that an American Idol contestant would sell anymore tickets than the next person, but Vanessa isn't a detriment to this production (which is PHENOMENAL, by the way....the best show in Toronto right now, IMO).

Why..?

re: NY Times Article

Tourists make up two-thirds of the audience, so, of course they're the main reason for stunt-casting.

Christy Carlson Romano

I don't consider her stunt casting.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Well the article continues to say that they don't do that in the winter time because theres not as many tourists so they appeal to the NY theatregoers that don't need big name stars, blah blah.

Me either, because I didn't think she was such a big star....but hey, to each their own.

Yes, and Stunt Casting has been discussed to death here

and on other boards so NYTimes writing about it seems a bit late for it to be a breaking story in the journalist's mind but oh well.

I'm not quite sure what else you could've thought was the reason for it... obviously "big" stars that are names outside of the theatre community are going to draw in people who wouldn't normally go out and see a Broadway show.... people like tourists.

I don't think she's a "big star" but she is appeals to the same audience that targets Beauty and the Beast so it's still stunt casting!

Oh boy! I forgot there was a limit to how many times you could post about something here! Thank you ever so much for reminding me!

My "interest" factor was raised due to the seasonal aspect. As in, ooh summer tourists = stunt casting. As a native New Yorker I dont pay much attention to tourist seasons.

I was talking about the stale story the paper printed, not about talking about it here -- merely pointing out that the reporter was not breaking new news since obviously it has been discussed to death before the paper went to press

My apologies :)

and yeah, it is late to be discussing it in the Times, but I guess since JMac just started, and Little Shop is closing soon, they felt it was good to print now.
