It turns out I might be making weekly trips to the city for about a day or a day and a half at a time (for sanity purposes as I am unwisely living with the family I am nannying/babysitting for). I am sure I will waste tons of money that I dont have to waste but theatre only occupies the evening and sometimes afternoon. What else is a fun thing to do? I have done all the tourist things and I cant do much in the shopping dept.
What do the New Yorkers on the board like to do? I figured you are the best to plan my empty days.

Posted: 7/4/04 at 7:53pmI can spend hours at the Strand Book Store on lower Broadway -- "eight miles of books!". Half the time, the people there are more intruiging than any shopping possibilities, and the prices on the books are dirt cheap if you do a little digging. I actually found a hardbound 1937 first-edition of Kaufman and Hart's ID RATHER BE RIGHT (with photos of Cohan) for five bucks.

Mmmm what I wind up doing in the city on days when I have nothing planned doesn't work for everyone... but as for things that would, well, I shop.... hang out in the park on 49th (by New World Grille where they have the BEST cheeseburgers ever) and people watch.... I'm pretty boring.
And of course, once the sun goes down, I need to agree with sabrelady

Visit the Cloisters Museum in Fort Tryon State Park. It is quite beautiful inthe summers when they offer garden tours. Have you ever done the Brooklyn Bridge walk? I'll be back later after I get some more caffine in my system.

Posted: 7/5/04 at 4:07pmThere's a good Broadway memorabilia exhibit at the Museum of the ity of New York on Fifth Ave at 104th Street. You might tie it in with a visit to the Guggenheim, about 10 blocks to the south.

If you are an art fan and if you are up in the museum area on 5th, visit the Frick Collection. The entrance is on 70th Street between Madison and 5th. This is a wonderful collection of paintings, sculpture, and furnishings in an opulent, old residence. Perfect for spending an hour or two. Not as overwhelming as The Met.

Oh, and any Broadway fan should visit the Footlight Record Store at 113 East 12th Street. You could combine this with a trip to the Strand Bookstore that Sean mentioned. The Strand is at Broadway and 12th.
Just by one CD on sale to stay within your budget.

Lunch in Bryant Park, people watching at Grand Central, and a trip to the NY Public Library ( just to see the lions) great fun and all FREE!

Posted: 7/5/04 at 9:45pmI recently "discovered" the beautiful Brooklyn Promenade. I don't think a lot of tourists or out-of-towners venture out of Manhattan, so make a trek across the Brooklyn Bridge (wonderful walk, by the way) and check out the brownstones on the other side.

How about brunch/lunch at the Water Club on FDR Drive at East 30th Street? Afterwards, you can go upstairs to the Crow's Nest for drinks and watch the boats on the water. Very very nice.
