I've been so busy with rehearsals and things since January that I feel real out of the loop on this: I'm going to NYC June 16-19 for a friend's bday adn we're trying to decide what to see.
What do you recommend? and is there anything set to open between now and then?
I think we're going to Sweeney and gonna try to see Spelling Bee (cause I wanna see it again!). I may try to talk him into Hairspray, which I can never see enough...beyond that, not sure. Thinking maybe DRS depending on who the cast is at that point, and maybe Piazza depending on who's in it as well.

Seeing HOT FEET, LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE, SHINING CITY, FAITH HEALER, and THE HISTORY BOYS this and next week, so I don't know about those.
I would recommend DROWSY only because of Bob Martin.

DROWSY and WEDDING SINGER are the best things out there right now? Are you on drugs, or are they the only two shows you've ever seen in your entire life?
I can see why people think DROWSY is a reincarnation of whatever religious icon you hold near and dear to your heart - but I found it to be very mediocre.
THE WEDDING SINGER is fun, but nothing more. Poorly directed, decently acted, and unevenly written - the show just doesn't go anywhere, do anything, or say anything.
If you like HAIRSPRAY, you will like THE WEDDING SINGER?
That's like saying "If you like SWEENEY TODD, you will love LESTAT."
The shows have nothing in common. HAIRSPRAY is brilliantly written - both the score and the book are beyond solid. The direction is inspired and fresh, and the show has a universal, heartfelt, beautiful message. HAIRSPRAY is one of the few shows that I have seen (and I saw HAIRSPRAY back in previews) that have stayed with me until this day. There's nothing else like it in it's respective genre, and saying that it bears and similarity to THE WEDDING SINGER is like telling Whittman, Shaiman, and O'Brien that they are all failures. Get a clue.

DRS is always a good bet. It's my default recommendation show.
Keep in mind that Sweeney and the other shows that are eligible for the Tonys this year may be a tough ticket in mid-late June if they win a few awards. You might do better with trying to see shows that are a bit older- or booking way in advance.

Lestat is far worse than The Wedding Singer and Sweeney is far better than Hairspray...
The difference between Hairspray and Wedding Singer is not all that vast.

I don't see any similarities.
It's an upbeat show that takes place decades ago, each with it's own distinct style.
And...
that's it.

So is HAIRSPRAY similar to THAL SHALT NOT?
Is RAGTIME similar to PAL JOEY?

This is making my head hurt.
Drowsy, Hairspray, and Wedding Singer all have one thing in common: they are musical comedies. Beyond that, we can debate all of their similarities and differences all night long and not agree.

Its not simply the settings in alternate decades, which garner comparison...
Its the kitsch value with which they're portrayed...

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is closing in July, so I would definitely see that before it closes.
There are numerous great musicals and plays you could see. I am sure the Tonys will probably influence your choices later on down the road. Nonetheless, try to see shows that you have not seen previously. Broaden your Broadway experience.

The Drowsy Chaperone was just hilarious and a good time.
The Light in the Piazza was very moving and well done, but slightly heavier material.

You can watch PIAZZA on t.v. the night before you come to the city...something to keep in mind if you are on a tight budget/timeframe
