Do NYMF shows ever make back their money or are producers just in it for the love of it and to see shows get developed?

As a three year (soon to be four) veteran of attending the festival, I will try to answer this one.
In my opinion, it's a little of both. The goal of the NYMF is to aid in the advancement of a show, to give it a paying audience it might not otherwise get at this level.
It is also a labor of love for the producers, creators and performers of these productions. Everybody puts their heart into these shows every year, and it shows.
It's not about turning a profit for a show at the festival (I don't beleive any show does this) but getting the show attention so it has a life beyond the festival.
Luckily, I have been able to see several of those successes, most notably Feeling Electric (now known as Next To Normal) in 2005.
