My memory may be failing but I can't remember the last time the Times published an OBCR review. In any case, great review and great publicity for this beautiful score/show.

The most romantic score since West Side Story? That statement alone renders this "review" worthless as criticism.

Well, MusicMan, your inability to back up why you believe that makes your statement pretty worthless as criticism, too.

Maria, One Hand, One Heart, Somewhere, I Have A Love, Tonight, even Something's Coming in the context of the show - pretty romantic songs to me.

I think it's a well written review and encapsulates a great deal of the critic's knowledge. Remember, it is an educated opinion by a professional. I know some of us don't agree with critics all the time nor believe that true, but that's what this is supposed to be at any rate.

Personally, I think Piazza is an incredibly romantic score: I'm not sure what I would go back to for comparison, but I don't think there's been anything quite as impressive as this in a couple decades. The overture itself is gorgeous. But I'm equally blown away by the individual songs. Every one possesses and entrancing melody - I feel like every time I listen to the score I'm swept away to Firenze. I know that sounds idiotic, but I really find validity in Mr. Holden's comments.

in terms of romance..it compares to A Little NIght music..its lush and rich and full of not only contradiction but pain and confusion..like life.
LOVE IT

This is what I'd call a "Money review"! It's remarkable positive, and it's amazing that the NYTimes is even reviewing a cast album! I think it make LITP the front runner for a Best Score Tony at the very least!

I agree Sparky, A Little Night Music may be the closest musical for a comparison.
