Natasha Pierre Great Comet 1812 character casting question

I've noticed that the actresses who have been cast in the roles of Natasha and Helene have all been PoCs.

Was it a deliberate casting choice or was it a case of color-blind casting that happened to go the way of the PoC actresses? just curious to know. if anyone could link me any interviews etc where the creative team  talked about this, that would be great.
