Need Advice For a Show

been a while since I've been on here. I want to take my girl friend (23 years old) to a show at the end of June. I prefer comedy or comedy musicals, she would prefer a musical. She's never been to Broadway although I've seen maybe fifteen shows. Money's tight so I'm not looking to spend more than fifty a ticket (I don't care where we sit). I was thinking Crucible balcony. Aladdin I've seen but they're a little too pricey. In your opinion, best show for 50 a seat or less? THANKS!

You could sign up for Roundabout Theatre's HipTix program (for anyone between 18 and 35, for free) which makes you eligible to buy 2 tickets for any of their shows, including She Loves Me. It's gorgeous musical comedy, so it should fit both your tastes. And it's a classic musical, so I think it's a good show to be someone's first Broadway show.

I haven't seen the Crucible but it's neither a musical nor a comedy, so I'm not sure how that's your first idea, considering the preferences you mentioned I agree about Aladdin, it's very pricey and they cheaper seats up in the balcony are pretty terrible. Definition of nose-bleed-seats!

Straight play comedy's to consider are An Act Of God and Fully Committed. Other funny musicals to think about are School of Rock, Matilda and perhaps Kinky Boots (haven't seen that one). Something Rotten is a hoot, but this being your girlfriend's first musical I think much of it would be over her head as they are mostly musical theater jokes.

I would suggest checking Show Score, the website gives you a nice overview of what's playing and how it's received (and what shows you might like) and also has a very good list for discounted ticket options for each of the shows.

Echoing IrisTinkerbell on a lot of this but...

I would probably avoid The Crucible, as it fits none of your criteria.

She Loves Me - it's a romantic musical comedy, if you don't get HipTix, there's a discount for $50 in the mid mezz /rear mezz. Buy @ box office to avoid online fees. See if she knows Zachary Levi or Jane Krawkowski and might be a fan of either of them.

The King and I - though not a comedy, it's a classic in an absolutely gorgeous production, get $32 advanced tix online through Lincoln Center's Linctix (subscription is free). I feel like this show is very quintessential Broadway

Fully Committed - hilarious one-man play, easy rush if you're willing to wait the day of - $40 tix - and/or try the lottery ($30). Easy choice if either of you are Modern Family fans. I'm not but I loved Jesse Tyler Ferguson's performance

School of Rock - musical comedy, really upbeat, not sure if you know anything about the movie, but it's a good measure to whether you'll enjoy this

Something Rotten - musical comedy that's both fun and funny, and has some cute romantic elements if that matters. As long as either of you enjoy clever wordplay and know some Shakespeare stuff (from school, etc.), since it parodies Shakespeare, then you're fine

Kinky Boots - musical comedy, might be enjoyable as well, and though I wasn't a fan myself, the last number was great

Thank you everyone for taking time to help me out. Unfortunately hiptix sold out for she loves me, so I got the $52 row NN seats. Seemed like the best bet for her since she likes romantic comedies. I checked it out it looks like a great show. Thanks again!!

If you prefer a musical comedy and she prefers a musical, why is The Crucible your first choice?
