Nessa Rose question

Ok, so - a question. My pal & I saw WICKED in late Nov. and we are still uncertain of a plot point. We may have missed it, but we were unsure of the below.

In Act 2 Nessa Rose is told by Boq that he cannot love her, that his heart always belonged to Glinda. In a frenzied, agonized moment Nessa grabs the spell book and begins casting a spell on him, which of course backfires due to her mis-pronunciation of the words in the incantation.

NOW - the question: was she casting a spell on his romantic heart to love her and not Glinda? Was she casting a spell on his romantic heart so that he would love no-one at all? Does someone DEFINITELY know exactly what sort of spell she was trying to cast on his heart before it all went drastically awry? What was her anticipated result with the spell she attempted to cast?

Those of you who hate WICKED, please don't reply to this thread.
I have no wish to debate. I am just asking a genuine plot question for my pal and I who caught the show and enjoyed the evening. Thanks, gang.

I'm pretty sure she is trying to make him fall in love with her, because in her song she sings "You're going to lose your heart to me I tell you, if I have to, I HAVE to, magic spell you." She then begins the spell. Hope this helps.

oh swell thank u! during that scene the woman next to me suddenly began babbling to her friend and we were all craning to hear, due to her rudeness.

I don't DEFINATELY know, but I'm pretty sure she was casting it so that he would love her, not Glinda. Nessa was desperate at that point in the show, and she could not stand the one man she loved leaving her. SHe would do anything to have him stay. Then she blaimed his tinman act on Elphie.

To put it in context for you- Nessas a bitch.

This is a different question, but does anyone know anything about that red dress Nessa wore in San Francisco? When did she wear it and why did they change it?

she wore it during the Wicked Witch of the East scene - maybe it was to hard to crawl on the floor with it...

the one thing i never understood is Mme Morrible said she can barely read it and Elphaba exclaimed, "What funny writing!" How, then, can Nessarose read the book (albeit pronouncing it wrong)?

The 2nd Act is full of plot holes and incongurities
Don't try to look too deep into them
But keep in mind, magic in Oz is a talent, not something entirely unusual as it is in our world, so it is possible that Elphie and Nessa got some talent from their mother and Elphie's was magnifyed because she is a child of both worlds.

I thought the spell was for him to lose his heart(if she can't have him no one will) and than when he does lose his heart Elphaba has to change him so he can live.

I still like the idea that she had no arms in the book and just could not walk in the stage production.

She puts the spell on him to lose his heart, not to love her. I can see how it can be tricking.

"I lost my heart to Glinda [...]"
"Lose your heart, we'll see about that"

Elphaba has to change him, so he at least lives.

I just gotta ask. Is there a reason why Nessa Rose is such a similar name to Dessa Rose ?

Yes, she puts a spell on him so that he'll lose his heart. She says something like "Since you don't have a heart, you might as well really not have one..." Boq then tells her he can feel his heart shrinking and begs for Elphaba's help. So, she has to turn him into something that is capable of physically living without a heart, ergo The Tinman.

Elphaba: What are you talking about?

Boq: I'm talking about my life. The little that's left of it. I'm not free to leave Munchkinland, none of us are. Ever since she took power, she's been stripping the Munchkins of our rights... and we didn't have that many to begin with! And do you know why?


Nessarose: To keep you here, with me. But none of that matters anymore. Look.


Boq: To Elphaba. You did this for her?

Nessarose: For both of us!

Boq: Nessa, this changes everything.

Nessarose: I know.

Boq: Where am I? What happened?

Nessarose: Nothing, Boq, you just fell asleep... and...

Boq: What is it, what's wrong?

Nessarose: No, it wasn't me it was her! I tried to stop her.

Nessarose: Boq, please listen! It was Elphaba! Boq! It was Elphaba!!!
