Am I reading this right? They've never recorded 'AND' (which I love) and now they aren't even putting it on the new CD? What's up. How about a COMPLETE Cast recording? I guess I'll have to wait and see before I get angry.
"The New Broadway Cast Recording will include the bonus track, "The Overture That Never Was," specially arranged for this album and performed on two pianos by Marvin Hamlisch. In addition, "And," a previously unrecorded musical number, will be available as an exclusive iTunes download. The New Broadway Cast recording of the 2006 production of A Chorus Line will be produced by David Caddick, Marvin Hamlisch and Jonathan Tunick for Masterworks Broadway and available in stores everywhere Tuesday, October 3, 2006."
Here's the link
Yeah, I just read that. Why re-record the show if it doesn't have all the music?
Will they be recording the album as it is in the show? (i.e. "Nothing" being in the middle of "Hello, Twelve" montage?)

"Why did they never record AND?"
Because Bobby's Monologue is throught it.

I'm sure they will. If you look at the OBC, Hello Twelve is in three parts (part three being my favorite)
It was divided into three parts for the cd rerelease. "Nothing" still comes after it on the cd, so I'm not sure how this suggests to you that "Nothing" will be a part of the montage on the new cd.
Another reason "And" probably wasn't recorded is that LPs only allowed for a certain amount of time. Hence the reason why the cd rerealease of the OBC had portions of the montage that didn't make it to the album.
I will just DIE if we can get more of the Montage on the new CR.
And I'm ok with "And.." being a bonus iTunes track as long as I can GET it - I hate how it isn't on the original recording.
Why not put "And" on the album? I mean, almost everyone has an iPod (myself included) but some fans of the show might not. How about them? It's just dumb.

YAYYY! I am very happy about this.
I live in the dark ages, I don't have an iPod ... yet But my birthday is coming soon... so is my trip to NYC...

You don't need an iPod to use iTunes.

If they are only releasing that to iTunes, then I'll definitely be putting that in my long list of "How the ACL Revival Managed to Alienate the Fans they Could've Easily Courted; or Kiss My Ass Goodbye."
"Kiss My Ass Goodbye" = Effing BRILLIANT!

I actually AM keeping such a list and they keep taking steps that add to it.

So, we'll have to spend an addition $1 to buy "And" on iTunes, that's dumb. It should just be on the cd.
Regardless, I'm sort of excited to see how the new cast sounds.
Wow. Here is a real crazy thought: compact discs don't have enough space to hold every song in the show. They could either choose not to record those songs OR offer them as extras on itunes, where there is unlimited space.
Frankly, I think its a great idea and hope more shows offer things that can't fit on disc on itunes.
So I am to believe that 'due to time constraints' an actual song from the show ('AND' to be exact) will not be on the CD but they have room for a BONUS TRACK of an 'Overture that never was'?
Wow, I guess I need to take Logic 101 again.
"And" is a SEQUENCE. Depending on how much they include, it could be ten minutes long. I bet the overture is 3-4 minutes top.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that after several remastered CD's each including more of the show in it's incomplete form, that maybe this time we could do it right. I think people would prefer the show in it's entirety. I would buy it. I think a LOT of people have been waiting for that.
It's nice that the additional 'sequence' will be available, it just seems like it wasn't well thought out or planned. I mean Hello Twelve Hello Thirteen is a sequence too and its going to be included.
I understand your point, but a complete recording of ACL would require two discs. If they aren't willing to spend the money on that, some things are going to have to be cut or trimmed.
A CHORUS LINE contains sevaral montages like "And" and "Hello 12, Hello 13" that contain a lot of dialogue. You and I would love to have those things preserved in their entirety, but the average tourist buying the cast recording is going to want the songs and music without all that talk. That is probably another reason why they are including a brief orchestral track like the "Overture That Never was" over "And."
I frankly don't see the problem with having bonus tracks available on itunes. I really think its a viable solution for fans who are more interested in these mostly spoken segments.
So if you pay more, you get less. I get it now.

A ridiculous, silly, and perhaps self-indulgent bonus.

Pay more than what?
The original CHORUS LINE cast album was the last one produced by Goddard Lieberson for Columbia records. He died just six months later.
Lieberson believed that as a general rule it was not a good idea to record dialgue. He felt records were for music only and that the dialogue would have meaning only for those who saw the show. (He would make exceptions when necessary, but you will notice that dialogue lead-ins are rare on Columbia cast albums.)
With CHORUS LINE the song "And..." is sung in counterpoint to dialogue. It would have be lengthy and would not have worked without the spoken sections. Since there was so much music in the show, some things had to be eliminated. "And..." was chosen.
With the montage he seemed to fall back on the older dictum of looking for potential singles. He chose to isolate "Nothing" in its own track (and perhaps Hamlish had a hand in this. He seems to have pushed "Nothing" as a stand alone number in concerts.)
As enjoyable as the CHORUS LINE cast album is, it doesn't really capture the show. I would have preferred 4 Lp sides with more of teh dialogue and the entire "montage" sequence given a side to itself. I hope the new recording will take that approach.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
