Posted: 6/10/05 at 2:20pmI really liked Closer to Heaven but I thought it was a bit messy. I love the PSBs and Jonathan Harvey as well but I just thought it was too obvious - the idea of a young gay boy coming to London to go clubbing was a bit lame but i thought there was lots about it that was cool - like the dancing for instance and most fo the music. Francis was very good I thought

Taboo I loved by the way caroline. Did you see it in London/ I saw it in NYC too and enjoyed it but i think its sad you guys didnt see the original version which was smaller, subtler and made more sense. That made me cry too.
Love Rosie for doing her best with it though - her heart was definitely in the right place. She should bring this play over if she wants to do something *really, really* good

I totally agree. I wonder if Rosie would do it again - shes hinted hasnt she - she could take the revamped version and restage it or something. She should could do worse than getting the guy who wrote BW to do it - I took my friend Sarah whos straight and she was so sad she couldnt leave after - its about relationships regardless of whether theyre gay or straight - its so rare you find gay relationships written about in a way that doesnt make you cringe
Im with you Caroline! Too much glitz is not waht Taboo the clubs was about!

Posted: 6/10/05 at 2:33pmi also think the bway version was too crammed with characters and i liked the character billy and i hate george singing pretty lies and and and... yeah. they need to pick a couple of the stories and focus the book on that. i would buy the london DVD but it wont work on my DVD player!!!!! *cries* i dont think rosie will do they show anytime soon... something tells me not, that is one show i would love to direct.

I agree, and it so sad that Broadway never got to hear that final song which ewan sings on the Uk soundtrack which icant remember what its called now but it was the best song in the whole show.
Yes, where was billy on broadway?

Yes its amazing. Dont know why they didnt like Petal for NYC the home of wild crazy behaviour (in a good way :))

Posted: 6/13/05 at 3:06pmhe was probably too risque for a new york audience, one that probably hadnt expierenced a gay club scene quite like the one of 80s London

Is that the case? i dont know as ive only been 3 times and not ahd the chance to go out clubbing. Seems such a shame. I think they should have done it in a smaller grittier venue like The Venue in london where you were part of the action.
very sad
We should get rosie to bring it back - even though George seems to be ungrateful sadly, although bless him he says things for the fireworks much of the time - would be great!

yeay, Time Out reviewed!!!
'The first half of Blowing Whistles is an agreeably bitchy comedy... in the second half Todd manages successfully to double track their relationship, using it both as an individual case and as an enquiry into the long term dynamics of gay couples - do you go on partying forever? ...Blowing Whistles is fail-safe entertainment'

'Full marks for Blowing Whistles which offers a refreshingly comic take on the difficulties of being gay and romantic in a sordid, rather heartless culture that treats sex as a commodity.
One ends up hoping that the play, like the kid, gets picked up by someone kind, considerate and loaded. It deserves a longer life.'
Dominic Cavendish, Daily Telegraph June 14th 2005
Double yeay!

Oh my gosh!!! AMAZING QUOTE from Julie Birchill in THE TIMES, the UKS most famous columnist!!!
'this brilliant play Blowing Whistles… so fantastically tough and tender that it often feels as if someone has got you in an arm lock only to give you the sweetest, softest kiss'
Amazing. Also amazing review in gay mag Boyz who say it may be transferring to the West End. It must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
