Next time, at least send an invitation!

According to Riedel, the Tony committee didn't even notify Sondheim that he was being honored. He apparently found out from the press, and therefore didn't bother to alter his travel plans.
Can't say I blame him.

Man what is up with that Tony committee? You'd think bestowing an honorary Tony would have some sort of procedure to it- contacting the person beforehand to make sure they will accept, for example....

Well now we know who is starting all those Bernadette vs. Patti threads.

Uh, Ms. Peters also got a Standing O and the live lobsters were not running down 6th Ave. during her performance.

.....that's very nice CPD.

Completely random and off topic, but nice.

I am glad you pointed that out actually CPD- I would have but heaven knows I am not one to fan the flames of Patti Vs. Bernadette rage.

If that story is true, it is, indeed, shameful.
And certainly the wrong way to honor a guest!

I thought it a little strange, too, but avoided the other thread about Sondheim's absence as it got too long and windy.

Even the newest member of any planning committee should have known that, much like bestowing an honorary degree at a university, the most important aspect of any special award is MAKING SURE THE GUEST OF HONOR IS AT THE PARTY!!!!

Hell, would the Tony Committee throw a wedding without the Bride and Groom??? After this week, I think they may indeed!

This might be the note they sent to Him Monday Morning:

We're sorry, Mr. Sondheim.
It won't happen at your NEXT Lifetime Achievement Awards.
We promise!

GEEZ!

Perhaps they also could've done more of a tribute, say a number other than the one from that mediocre revival? Perhaps have Patti do "Worst Pies in London"...lobsters and all.

Oh, and Larry Gelbart? B'nai Venuto? Brill.

Riedel's comment that Mandy was in Steve's signature "panhandler" beard (or something to that effect) was not witty at all. Maybe the Post could replace him with Larry Gelbart. The collumns would be funnier.

In last place, with a pathetic eight correct predictions, was yours truly.

Maybe he would do better with his predictions if he actually bothered to go see the shows he writes about!

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Reidel is SPREADING LIES!

Sondheim did know about the invitation.

He was in the City, on Sunday night, and chose not to come to the ceremony (according to his boyfriend Jeff) because he's so shy.

He just wasn't comfortable being under the big spotlight.

Reidel is an idiot.

Well, that's what Riedel usually does TooDarnHot. What else would you expect from him?
I believe you. Don't worry. Your reason for his absence makes a lot more sense too.
