Can anyone tell me why the son in Next to Normal would make Diana do bad things to herself like cut herself and such ?? (he seemed like a bad person to me through out the whole show) Also why did he start haunting the dad at the end ? Thanks :)

Spoilers... might want to add that. Anyway the second part of your question is open to interpretation and I think that Gabe wanted her with him. Of course he is just a figment of her imagination or whatever.

SPOILERS:
The son (Gabe) does not exist. He died at infancy. This instance activated a mental illness in the mother (Diana). It's all explained in the show. You just have to listen to the lyrics...whatever they're worth.
*sighs*
Gabe does not actually MAKE his mom do anything. With the thought of actually losing her son, she makes the decision to try and join him rather than stay with her life. She wants to be with Gabe in his world and she imagines them dancing (I am imagine like the people on top of a music box) and the only way they can always continue their "dance" is in his world.
To be fair though reading the book, the script definitely makes it appear Gabe is more than just a figment of Diana's imagination. During "I'm Alive" it says he appears in multiple places, like the scene at home with Dan and Natalie. Whether this is more symbolic, like his death is affecting all of their lives, etc. is the part that's up to interpretation.
