Your last sentence now confuses me whether you do believe it's intentional or not.
I take it to mean "I think it's somewhat intentional but I don't really believe the lack of response when questioning whether it is intentional shows this".....In any case I wasn't referring to your "interpretation of a piece of art" rather your 'interpretation of someone not responding to a question' (i.e. I didn't care what you said just why you said it, which was apparently a 'joke' anyway so it's all 'moot').

I'm confused as to what's so confusing.
Summary: I think it's quite possibly but not definitely intentional. I joked that the Twitter non-response was proof that it was intentional. I do not actually think the Twitter non-response was proof of either interpretation, therefore I used the winking smilie to indicate that I wasn't being 100% serious.

I agree with timote316.
Even though Gabe is her "son" the person we see is NOT her child. Gabe died, and obviously Diana does not know what he would look like, therefor in her mind Dan is the younger template for Gabe (Even adding more to the dillusion that hes alive by having him "look like his father".)
Maybe Gabes apperence of Dianas younger/exciting husband attracts her, thus alluding to some sexual undertones.
I know during "I dreamed a dance" I just felt as if it was uncomfortable for a mother and child to be acting like that towards each other.
But back to the OPs question. While I do think a gender swap would be interesting the direction would need to have some heavy changes.
I think if a man played Dianas character (like it is now) he would just seem extremely extremely psychotic and at the same time wimpy.
Alot of work would go into making the characters diffrent (book and lyric wise).
So would it even be Next to Normal anymore then??
