Tim Burton will NEVER allow an Edward Scissorhands musical! If he said he will never greenlight a sequel or a remake (as it is his most personal film and he doesn't want to ruin the purity of it), I highly doubt he would ever greenlight or help produce a musicalized version.
Although to be honest, it could be pretty amazing.

Yes, Matthew Bourne's Company did an all dance version of Edward Scissorhands that started in London and then toured the US. Here is a link to a web site that talks about the production. http://www.new-adventures.net/productions/scissorhands
I was lucky enough to see the production when it toured and it was fantastic.
-As for the subject of this post-yes, it is awesome when we get original musicals (Next to Normal is one of my favorite shows), but shows that are adaptations can also be good-and since known quantities tend to sell better, I think ya just need to accept that we are going to be seeing a lot of adaptations. In my opinion, that's not necessarily bad-Matilda, Kinky Boots, Newsies among many others-there's plenty of great adaptations out there.
Better a great adaptation than a mediocre original story.
I learned the hard way, myself, that some people are story writers, and others are story tellers. I'm a teller- crafting an original plot and characters that work is something I can do if given years, but with at least SOME semblance of existing plot and characters, i can do great things. This is why I always have one eye on the public domain, and another eye on small indie art that I could snap up the rights for without fighting a ton of other artists or studios.
