I know Secret Life of Bees is getting allot of attention, but Im wondering if anyone has seen the OTHER Atlantic Theatre Company production currently in previews.

I have had great luck with new plays premiering at the Stage Two space in the past (Skeleton Crew, Homecoming Queen)

In the not-so-sunny side of California, Alix bounces between motel rooms, taking care of her brothers for her mostly MIA mother. Mason is a budding songwriter trying to keep off the radar of his absent father in Hong Kong. Together, they must learn to scrape by without giving up their dreams.

I went on Wednesday and was so disappointed that I left at intermission. The two leads gave emotionless performances- it felt like they were just going through the lines.

If anyone else saw it, can you let me know what happens in a Act II via PM?

Can't help, Carmen. I, too, left at intermission on Friday. It was just mind-numbing.That you care enough to ask what happened in Act 2 means you're a better person than I.
Even someone directly involved with the production was bored.
He sat two seats away and spent the first act scrolling through his phone.

Well, good to know I'm not alone - mind-numbing is the perfect description! And wow, that was rude of him - especially being part of the production. When I went, the lady next to me had some connection to the show via her husband. At the start of intermission (I was still debating stay/go), she turned around and said "that was about what I expected." Hmm, not the most positive comment.

I saw this over the weekend, and I'm honestly struggling to think of the last time I encountered a play produced by a major NYC theater company that seemed so unready for prime time. The writing is dull and flat, not to mention awash in cliches. The two leads have no charisma. How did this end up getting a major NYC production?
