#1Non-Equity going to Equity Auditions?
Posted: 6/22/08 at 3:14amI have a question. What if you're Non-Equity but you go to an audition that is like "Seeking Singers" but it's an Equity audition for, say, Tale of Two Cities or something like that. Do you just hang around the audition area and hope to be seen, or do you they put you on a list or how does that all work? I understand that they don't have to see you, but a lot of the times they will. Are certain casting directors better about seeing Non-Equity then some? I know Bernard Telsey casts quite a bit of Broadway shows, are they pretty good about seeing Non-Equity? Please just add any bit of information you can. I'm curious to know how all this works.

Posted: 6/22/08 at 10:24amYou have to get there very early and if a non-eq list has not been started then you start one. It's considered unofficial but they have always accepted the list when I used to go. Then you wait around all day and sometimes they see you if they're moving fast or they may leave you for the end of the day. Of course the ECC's are usually very crowded and those do not often see non-eqs. Good luck!

Posted: 6/22/08 at 12:33pmThanks for the Searches! So, after reading the posts, it seems like EPA are the way to go. How do most of these auditions work? Since their principal auditions do they see you for a certain role, or do you read sides from the show? Or do they just talk to you and let you sing? Also, if the casting calls are in the Equity building can Non-Eq still get in? That might be a dumb question, but I know it's an Equity building, so can a Non-Equity get into the building to see the different casting notices?

You can go to ActorsEquity.org or get a Backstage subscription. You don't need to go to the building.
At those calls, if you get seen, usually you go in, sing however many bars (at the end of the day I've sung four notes to sixteen bars), and that's it.

Posted: 6/22/08 at 12:38pmoh, I know about Backstage and whatnot, but after reading those posts it seems like for the Chorus Calls that they put a sign-up in the Equity building like weeks ahead of time. I'm not a great dancer so a chorus Call isn't something I'd go to, but it's nice to know the information just in case I want to.

Posted: 6/22/08 at 12:40pmThe chorus calls are all in Backstage and on the website. It doesn't really matter when you find out, just that you get there early enough. Updated On: 6/22/08 at 12:40 PM

Just FYI there are 2 different types of AEA Chorus Calls. One for singers and one for dancers. There are several times that at CC non-equity will be seen if time permits.
You can get into the Equity building, but you can't get into the lounge. Usually, there is a non-equity list posted and a lot of the time they will already know if the Casting Directors will see non-equity or not.
Good Luck!

I apologize, but I have a few more questions.
1. The sign-up list goes up a week early for Equity Chorus Calls, right? But, then, is the Non-Eq list put up the day-of?
2. What is the experience like going to an Equity Chorus Call at the AEA Building? Is it insane? I know that us Non-Eqs aren't allowed to use the restrooms in the building, but anything else I should know?

Yes, the non-eq list goes up the day of.
And...I've always found it odd that we can't use the restrooms in the AEA building. I mean, I know we're not equity and all, but come on!

Posted: 1/11/09 at 11:48pmYeah, it's pretty demeaning, but I guess when we're Equity, we'll be like "suck it bitch go to the McDonalds and pee!"

Posted: 4/30/09 at 12:15amWhen Equity auditions are at the AEA Building what is the earliest time you can get in the building to sign up on the list on the door? I couldn't find anywhere what time the building opens.

Posted: 4/30/09 at 12:25amThey will not honor an un-official list for an equity call. They will rip it up. The equity building opens at 8am (currently, those are their warm hours). People start lining up at probably around 6. ( I personally don't, but I'm judging from how long the line is when I get there)
