Posted: 3/14/07 at 11:45amDoes anyone know the whole process for a non-union actor who is auditioning at an Equity open call? I know you have to like put your name on a list or something anyone care to explain further?

While there are numerous possibilities...
If the call is at an AEA building, you won't even be able to get inside.
If it's at a regular studio (Chelsea, Ripley-Grier, etc.), you'll be put on a separate list that won't even be considered until the end of the call. It's a 50/50 shot as to whether the monitor or producer sees non-AEA - I know RENT and SPRING AWAKENING both saw non-union at their last calls.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 1:15pmAt Equity Open Calls, both Non-Eq and Equity are seen. They have a list you sign up on before the call starts, but it all depends on what time you get there. At one open call I went to, the first person got there at 5:30 in the morning, so beware. Hope that helps

Let me clear up some mis-information.
You can get into the Equity building without a Union Card. When you walk in, you just state your name to the Security Guard and let him take your picture for the coputer security camera. All auditions at Equity are on the SEcond floor. When you get there, you will not be allowed into the lounge which serves as the waiting area for the Audition studios. Equity has set up benches for Non-Eq (also known as "Future Members")to sit on while they wait.
If there is time left after all Union members who showed up have auditioned, the producer has the option of seeing non-eq.
This actually does happen-My wife was Casting for a theater today at Equity for a Chorus Call and she saw non-eq people. This literally just happenned 2 hours ago.
Hope that clears things up.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 3:09pmYes that is exactly right. They also have non-eq sign up sheets in the "future member" section. Recently though, the EMC's haven't even been able to be seen, much less non-eq people, so it can be tough, but always worth a try.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 3:09pmIt also depends on what the director has time to look at. Sometimes they may be looking only for a specific woman so he will see those no-union women.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 3:15pmThe worst is when you're non-union and they invite you to come because of your reputation but then the Equity monitor takes one look at you and won't even let you in the door! Argh!!!

I've been waiting for you or your doppelganger to show up - what took you so long? Mama worries, you know.

If, by some slim chance, you should ever get to audition for anything, try not to use the word "like" in the wrong places

Yeah, and when you're giving grammar advice, spell everything correctly. LOL--I couldn't resist!
EDIT: Tom fixed it...
Getting into the Equity audition sucks if it's in the Equity building. They will let you in, but you might not get seen at all--if it's a "young" show like SA, you'll have a better chance.

Posted: 3/14/07 at 5:35pmMost union members were non-union when they moved to New York. It will happen. If you really want it- Two words: Theatreworks USA!
