Odd question for the board. Can anyone name me a non-western musical other than Pacific Overtures, The King and I, Bombay Dreams, or Flower Drum Song? Basically any other musical either set in a non-western location or who's music is of that style. Thanks!

SAYONARA, MISS SAIGON & THE MIKADO popped into mind first.

David walked into the valley With a stone clutched in his hand He was only a boy But he knew someone must take a stand There will always be a valley Always mountains one must scale There will always be perilous waters Which someone must sail -Into the Fire Scarlet Pimpernel

Part of Chess takes place in Thailand. Does that count?

asim: I should have rephrased. I wasn't sure if CJWesselman was specifially looking for Asain-set or Asian-themed musicals, and AIDA is African/Egyptian, so I used his phrase "non-Western," since I wasn't sure exactly what was meant.

Since I'm not entirely sure what's meant by Western either -- what about Kismet? Kwamina? Sarafina?

What about Once On This Island? And Evita? What does Western mean? Geographically, culturally, financially?
