Yea. Now it's my time to ask for audition suggestions. The catch here is that it must be a capella and I only get to sing one minute's worth. I'm a soprano. And this is what it says:
It's for RAGTIME
We recommend that you choose a song in the style of the show (but not a song from the show!) Any "classic" musical theater song will be great, as well as jazz and gospel pieces.
Any suggestions? I would love to do some Millie. Could I get away with that?
Also, though all parts dont entail dance, we must all go to a dance audition. This TERRIFIES me as I have never been to one nor have I done dancing outside of what was blocked for me in a past musical. Am I just going to fall apart?
*Edit: Whoops. Thanks for pointing out that I didnt mention the show!
What show is this for?
Sorry... i thought I included it. It's for Ragtime... which I know nothing about.
If you are comfortable singing something from Millie, you should definately audition with that. It's best you audition with a song you like and are comfortable singing.

Try something from Parade. Perhaps "You Don't Know This Man".
The thing about Millie is that most of the songs start out kind of slow... I want to sing something strong. Perhaps Not for the Life of Me or the reprise. Can Jimmy be done a capella without seeming a little crazy?
Oh... how about Forget about the Boy? I am leaning in that direction...
Thanks Mattio, but I dont know Parade and I will have to audition in less than a week and half.
This is scary for me. I havent done any performing in over 2 years!
"Forget About the Boy" is a good choice from "Millie".
And no, "Jimmy" can't be done a capella without seeming crazy, I've tried. I think since it's starts off sort of fast and slows down.

Do you know any of the following shows?

And can you belt or are you looking for a head voice song?
Sorry. Not familiar with those.
And yes, I can belt
And while I'm at it:
If someone could help me out with a site or just their own knowledge: which roles am I even up for? I know Audra McDonald was in the original cast... and seeing as how I am blonde, i dont think I will up for that part.
I have read some synopsis(-es?) and I am having trouble getting through them and making sense. What is it really about? Sorry... I am such an annoyance

Probably the mother. I forgot her name. Are you familiar with Mack and Mabel?
Isn't the mother just known as The Mother?
Broadway Legend Joined: 8/10/03
That's what I thought. Also probably why I couldn't recall her name.
I should be beat with a stick.
Mattio, you are making me feel so guilty. I dont know Mack & Mabel, either. I am ashamed of my musical knowledge... I really am trying now, though.
And, yes, it is just The Mother... all the summaries say that, as well.

LoL....that's okay. I'm picking some rather obscure stuff. Maybe "Ordinary Kind of Woman" from Pippin. How about this....list some shows you're familiar with music-wise?

Hm. If you're Caucasian, I imagine you're either up for the part of Mother (That's her name- Mother), Evelyn Nesbit, a showgirl involved in the "crime of the century," or perhaps Emma Goldman, the anarchist. Though I don't think Goldman is a soprano.
Audra McDonald played the part of Sarah, an African-American woman who has a child with the pianist Coalhouse Walker and comes to live with Mother's family, which also consists of Father, Little Boy, Younger Brother, and Grandfather. So I doubt you're up for her part if you're blonde. :P
The other characters include the immigrant Tateh and his daughter Little Girl, and historical figures like Harry Houdini, JP Morgan, Admiral Perry, Booker T. Washington, and Henry Ford. The musical is about how all their lives intertwine in the 1910s.
I'm familar with the current stuff and the classic movie stuff:
Millie, Wicked, Assassins, LSoH, Hairspray, Victor/Victoria, Sound of Music, Music Man, Mary Poppins, Grease, South Pacific, Annie, Bye Bye Birdie, Cinderella, Les Mis, some Jekyll & Hyde, Chicago, etc.
So, in conclusion, I really should be hurt. I wish my parents had exposed me to musicals!
What about "Someone Like You" from "J+H"?

I adore Someone Like You... but do you think I could really get into the good stuff with just a minute?
And Mattio, That is a great suggestion. But, which do you think would be stronger.. Millie or Assassins? It says that we will also be asked to do scales so I guess range isnt as important.
Does it matter that Unworthy isnt jazzy?... b/c if thats the case, I might consider some Wicked too (oh please dont kill me)
I suppose since there is no music, I could start in the middle of any song too, as long as it makes sense.

If I remember right, Mother's material isn't really jazzy. More torchy and emotional. And while I do discourage using Wicked material as an audition piece, I would say go with "I'm Not That Girl".
YIKES - music from Thoroughly Modern Millie is all wrong for a Ragtime Audition - that stuff is completely the wrong style and feel. I like the suggestion of You Don't know This Man from Parade - its much like a song that Mother sings in Ragtime so would be a good choice. If you're an African American performer - you could do something more gospel oriented - but please, no Millie.
