This isn't too surprising given that Germany is one of Stage Entertainment's major markets (if not their top market overall). Hamburg's needed a new show for ages, too.

"Hamburg's needed a new show for ages, too"

Why? We got Tarzan just a year ago, "Ich war noch niemals in New York" opened in December 2007. We just have three SE theatres and Lion King is not going anywhere.

The actual premiere date hasn't been confirmed yet. Tickets are just on sale from January 2011 on, but that might change to late 2010.

No cast details have been announced yet. I haven't seen any audition ads for it, neither on SE's website or in the musical press or even heard about iauditions from a friend who works for SE.

How long has The Lion King played Hamburg now for?

I see Sister Act is going to play Hamburg, as I do not speak German, can you advise me if this is open ended or how long is Sister Act going to sit down for please?

Tarzan's the newest, and Ich war noch Niemals has been there for years (plus the VBW production is opening soon). It's also about time for Lion King to make a transfer somewhere...

@ phantom: it is open ended but you can expect it, if it is successful, to run for about 2 - 3 years and then move on, most likely to Stuttgart. That is what happens to most SE shows in Germany these days.

Lion King won't go anywhere. It is far too successful. SE is not taking the risk of moving it to another city.
The production of "Ich war noch niemals in New York" in Vienna actually has no influence on Germany. Actually the German production of it is moving to Stuttgart replacing We Will Rock You.

Cheers for the update exedore and MH2.

I know little about German theatre scene, but it is of interest, as it is one country outside USA, UK, Australia and Japan that has an active theatre scene and lots of Broadway/West End shows go to Germany. Apologies for so many questions but German theatre intrigues me.

So the show "Ich war noch niemals in New York", what would this translate to in English and indeed has this been seen on the West End or Broadway or is it just a pure Germanic musical?

Tanz der Vampire I workout as 'Dance of the Vampire' which has come up on here before and seems to do very well in Germany, this show did play Broadway with Michael Crawford and bombed, I understand the version was not done well? I see from the SE website that it is playing a little known place called Oberhausen, has it played here long? I imagine it has played other German cities, but did it sit down for long in other cities?

Thanks for the gen on The Lion King and as you say looks to be going nowhere, has The Lion King played any other German cities?

re: Nuns to Raise There Voice's in. . . . .

Lion King has never played any other city in Germany but Hamburg opening here in 2001.

"Ich war noch niemals in New York" (I have never been in New York) is a German jukebox musical with music by the Austrian singer Udo Juergens (especially popular with the older ladies) and a book by the German novelist Hera Lind (think of Cecilia Ahern and you know what kind of novels she usually writes). Not my cup of tea though I normally do not mind jukebox musicals. It mainly seems to attract fans of his music whenever I pass by that theatre or when I actually went once a few months ago.

Tanz der Vampire was on in Stuttgart (2000 - 2003), Hamburg (2003 - 2006) and Berlin (2006 - 2008 ) in Germany before. It opened in Oberhausen late 2008 and will close there in January next year moving back to Stuttgart which is advertised as a limited run but who knows... That version cannot be compared to the Broadway one.

What you need to know about German theatre as well is that besides the commercial theatre which is mainly Stage Entertainment, pretty much each city/town has its own theatre (subsidised) and shows operas, straight plays, sometimes ballet and usually one/two musicals per season in repertory. Tickets are a lot cheaper (since theatres are subsidised) but the productions are professional ones with the leads usually being trained musical performers (ensemble often people from the opera ensemble and choir). I actually see a lot more of these productions when I see musicals here than Stage Entertainment shows.

This doesn't come as a shock to me. However, I wish that Stage Entertainment had some influence in New York, that way they could get this show over here faster.

However, the only thing Stage Entertainment owns in America, is New World Stages and that is it.

Winston are you alluding to 'Ich war noch niemals in New York' going to New York, if you are I knew you were mad, but not insane, no disrespect to German theatre I could not see this working in New York or London the show id too quintessential German.

Now I would of thought Spring Awakening would do well, in Frank Wedekind native land.

Are musicals in Germany sung in German?

re: Nuns to Raise There Voice's in. . . . .

Winston's referring to Sister Act.

And yes, Phantom, most shows in Germany are translated into German. Some of the jukebox shows (e.g. most of We Will Rock You) will leave songs in English, but even Mamma Mia's performed entirely in German.

Translation quality varies wildly depending on who's doing it and how close they want to keep to the original text (and if they have time to work out emphasis issues, which are what plague me at the moment...)

Well, if it was ever shown here.
Unfortunately the run in Duesseldorf was first postponed to open first in Vienna where it was not successful at all and cancelled after a few weeks. It seems unlikely at the moment that any of the commercial musical companies will do it.

re: Nuns to Raise There Voice's in. . . . .

I'm sure I heard somewhere that Spring Awakening (the musical) has flopped everywhere it's been restaged outside of the US. Who knows why - less access to tickets for young audiences that aren't so cheap you lose money anyway? The content being completely unshocking and mildly amusing for Europeans or totally inappropriate for Asian audiences? God knows, I'm just throwing random ideas around.

Winston, although Stage Ent only owns New World Stages they've co-produced loads of shows throughout the 90s and early 00s in the States (TITANIC and URINETOWN being but two.)
