don't know how they did it, but somehow Gerry McIntyre and crew canvased the underpopulated and storm ravaged city of New Orleans and found 15 or so of the most incredibly talented and committed kids. And, he didn't go easy on them either! The show was VERY faithful to the Broadway production and these kids kicked ass!!! They found a Ti Moune that could belt the high notes in "Waiting For Life, " a 12 year old bongo drum playing wonder, and a Mama Euralie who stepped in at the last minute, and with one week's rehearsal, convinced everyone she WILL be on Broadway someday.
I wish you could have all seen the excitement and pride on their faces ( especially when they heard LaChanze was in the audience!)Clearly, this experience has meant the world to them, and helped them cope with the post-Katrina challenges they all face. Before the show started, they showed the clip of the documentary where the cast learned they'd be coming to NY. It was as if they'd won the lottery. It's clear that theater has indeed changed their lives. I can't wait to see the whole journey on film. As the song says, "our lives become the stories that we weave..."
And, of course, the evening only reinforced OOTI as my favorite show ever. It's beautifully paced with an amazing story and score.
AFTER THE STORM is comprised of a group of AMAZINGLY committed and dedicated people. They are still seeking support for the continued editing of the film and funding for the continued revitalization of New Orleans Youth Theater. If you want to contribute, follow the link below.
If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer if I can.
