Posted: 6/30/04 at 11:21pmProbably because, even though it's A WONDERFUL show, it probably isn't suited to an on broadway setting. (sort of like Hedwig and the Angry Inch).

Posted: 7/1/04 at 8:14amBecause the show belongs in an intimate setting. In 1960, the concept of an eight character musical with no "stars", no scenery and just a piano and harp for accompaniment would have been a disaster on Broadway.

Posted: 7/1/04 at 5:43pmwell, im not suggesting they would take the show exactly how it was and stick it on broadway. Im sure there was some tweaking potential. was there some other reason. Like was there some producer or writer who didn't want it on broadway?

Just a question, how long did it run? 30 or 40 years? I just loved that show!

Posted: 7/1/04 at 5:50pmNo. It was just too small an intimate of show for the Broadway of 1960, when most shows still had a singing AND a dancing chorus, a 30 piece orchestra, tons of sets and costumes and big stars in the leads -- audiences wanted their money's worth for their $8 or whatever the top price was at that time. And remember the reviews for it from the Times etc... were decidedly lukewarm -- it wasn't considered a big deal at the time. Only after it had run for a few years (completely under everyone's radar) did any sort of buzz start about it.

You like the Fantasticks, and you hate Anything Goes?
Strange, strange child.

stop right there missy. Anything goes is a hodge podge of anoying songs with NO PLOT! And the jokes ARE NOT FUNNY! the story must stand by itself. The whole reason i got into broadway cause i love the idea of music highlighting a story. I abhor the idea of trying to write a story into pre-written songs.
no offense...

Anything Goes has some of the most wonderful music ever to be included in a musical.
It's really too bad that you can't recognize the brilliance of Cole Porter.

Brilliant argument.
But you can't fight Anything Goes.
It's hummable.
