How are the rights to a studio cast recording negotiated? Does one petition ASCAP/BMI, the way one would to record a cover album? Or is it through the licensing house that represents that show?

I know it's doable, otherwise there wouldn't be the immense number of knockoff recordings for some popular shows.

Are you asking about obtaining the rights to record a cast recording of a show, or are you asking about obtaining the rights to use an already existing cast recording for commercial purposes?

If you're asking to just make a cover cast recording of a particular show, it's quite simple. But not sure if that's what you're asking.

Yes, that was my question. The theatre I work with primarily had presented annual engagements of one particular show for eleven years, and are considering the possibility of a recording.
