How are the rights to a studio cast recording negotiated? Does one petition ASCAP/BMI, the way one would to record a cover album? Or is it through the licensing house that represents that show?
I know it's doable, otherwise there wouldn't be the immense number of knockoff recordings for some popular shows.

If you're asking to just make a cover cast recording of a particular show, it's quite simple. But not sure if that's what you're asking.
