Of Thee I Sing

I got Broadway: The American Musical as an early Christmas present and I have been watching it. I know everyone is getting tired of revivals but how poignant and great would it be if they revived "Of Thee I sing" on Broadway? Is it a possibility? I mean I want to see new things on Broadway but Of Thee I Sing sounds like a classic that deserves to see the Broadway stage again. What does everyone else think?

re: Of Thee I Sing

It may be a little too strange and precious for a Broadway revival. You know... revolving around corn muffins the way it does. (In fact, the Broadway revival in the 1950s expired quickly). But I stumbled across the script for Of Thee I Sing in the 80s, and loved its quirky satire, and then adored the complete rendering of the score in the Larry Kert/Maureen McGovern/Jack Gilford version (along with Of Thee I Sing's sequel, Let 'Em Eat Cake). But those dazzling long song sequences with truly loopy and witty Ira Gershwin lyrics are wildly inventive while they also seem to be Ira's tribute to Gilbert and Sullivan. There are all sorts of clever use of musical reprises, or just plain eccentricity. "Some Girls Can Bake A Pie" ends with what I can only call a musical nervous breakdown as the chorus runs around shrieking "There's none but Mary Turner/Could ever be his mate" I believe eight times in the score (six times on the Kert/McGovern recording).

At any rate, try to track down the full recording and experience it. There is also the Broadway revival recording on EMI/Angel which is a colorful rendering of the score, but greatly pared down.

I am at home for break and I found one at the local library that says 1987 and it was done by CBS records. It has both Of Thee I Sing and Let Them Eat Caker on a two disc set. Thanks for the info. I had heard of it before but it really caught my attention last night so I am going to do some looking into it and appreciate all the info I can get.

Yes, the '87 CBS recording is the one. Kert is a little underwhelming as Wintergreen, but he gets by. Do take a listen...to Let 'Em Eat Cake too, which in some ways is even more startling, but less sunny than Of Thee I Sing.

re: Of Thee I Sing

Didn't they just do this out at PaperMill a couple of months back? I think my friend Garrett Long was the leading lady...I had hoped to see it, but was too busy with my own show (and, admittedly, Broke!) I love the version of the title song that Maureen McGovern does on the Naughy Baby CD...beautiful arrangement.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

The Gershwin's Brother's "Of Thee I Sing", the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Sorry, I have a final in an hour in my theater class lol. Thats a question re: Of Thee I Sing

Yes, although George Gershwin wasn't awarded for his music. The Pulitzer was just awarded to the book and lyrics. Composers of the later Pulitzer winners were awarded alongside the men who wrote the words.

Redhot - it must have been another show that our Garrett's did together (Papermill) - my best friend, whom I told you worked with Garrett Long at MTW, did that production as well. Small world this theatre thing :)
But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

re: Of Thee I Sing

Didn't it have Jeffrey Denman?
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"

re: Of Thee I Sing

I saw a production of "Of Thee I Sing" in October, and I thought it was excellent. Maybe it was because it was right before the election and the show mocks everything related to the political process, but the audience responded very well to it. The show is great fun. I'd love to see it again (and get ahold of the 1987 recording again from the library...).
