Forgive my not knowing the correct terminology, but we're planning a trip to Boston in the fall and I would love to know if there's a list of companies who do plays on a smaller level than the Huntington, the Wang, etc.? What would be called Off Broadway or even Off off Broadway (now it's indie theater). Or does one simply look at Time Out Boston to see what smaller shows might be playing? Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks!
There are several smaller theatre companies, among them: New Repertory Theatre (Watertown), Speakeasy Stage Company, Lyric Stage Company, Company One, Central Square Theatre (Cambridge), American Repertory Theatre (Cambridge). You can go to their individual websites, or check out Theatermania and Stage Source, for more comprehensive listings. It is shaping up to be a great season with lots of choices. Good luck!
Also check out ArtsBoston.org for half-price tickets to just about every regional theater in the area.
The Huntington also offers "smaller" shows at the Wimberly Theatre in the Boston Center for the Arts on Tremont Street in the South End. The website for all the theaters located in the BCA is BostonTheatreScene.com.
Enjoy Boston. It's a GREAT theater town! Arts Boston
Just a quick correction... the Huntington owns the Calderwood Pavilion, which houses the Wimberly Theatre, and does two shows there annually. Almost constantly, however, other smaller companies present shows there (or right next door, in the BCA Plaza Theatres). Those shows can all be found on bostontheatrescene.com, as noted :)
Definitely do check out ArtsBoston. They've revamped their site recently, and its pretty comprehensive. Enjoy!
