Talk amongst yourselves?
Or not. I'll start: Hmm...who here likes David Yazbek?

Ya know.... I hate threads like this... but I'll bite.

I think that David Yazbek is awesome. A fresh talent on Broadway with a new style! I think his timing has been bad both times out so far, and he'll win his Tony in time.
There! C'mon people, let's get some support here!

DRS is my first encounter with Yazbek and I adore it. The music is great but the lyrics really blew me away. A kind of contemporary Alan Lerner comes to mind.
I think he's a genuine talent, lyrically and musically. He's got a real theatrical sensibility, as evidenced by some really touching moments in The Full Monty (Breeze Off the River, You Rule My World reprise). Unfortunately, I think he's still torn about being a Broadway composer (rather than a indie rock singer with a Broadway show to his credit). When he dives in head first and lets go of some of the self-effacement, I think he'll write a seminal work of theater.

I hated "The Full Monty" (sooo monotonous) and loved Dirty rotten Scoundrels". He is talented for sure. I mean writing in so many musical styles shows his versatility. I think he is at his best when he's writing a little funky on the one hand or a slow ballad on the other hand. Well, what more could I say. We need a few more shows by him to judge further...
Oh yes, his Lyrics: he is one of the best in the younger generation beside Dave Zippel and Lynn Ahrens I'd say.

Only work I'm familiar with is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which I love. I'd like to get some of his other cd's when the old family budget allows.
Not to quibble, but don't these type threads usually go on the off-topic board? :)
JF - you should def. check out TFM - It has a lot of similarities ti DRS, but more feeling...and it's funnier.
But then again, I went to Andre's show (who is on TFM) and met him - he's my favorite performer. Maybe I am biased...
Thank you. His lyrics are quite brilliant indeed. You should check out his other CD's, not from Bway. They're kind of poppish, sometimes rockish. I enjoy listening to them, especially since the lyrics just kind of flow without thought. Different, I'd say, from his Broadway scores. I just felt obligated to make a thread like this because he is such an unrecognized genius. (Or as it says on his site:

Bumping this because I just got my "Tape Recorder (Collected Works)" Yazbek CD in today's mail. Just put it in and am listening to the first song.
Have to say I'm very impressed with What Are Records?'s service.
I ordered this on July 2 and it came today (July 7), via USPS!
I'm enjoying this! Not much of a music critic, but I know what makes my ears happy. :)
Same here, except I bought it from the Imperial Theater so it's signed, too! Great CD!
I adore his score for DRS. The lyrics are so creative and the songs perfectly serve the show and the songs are character driven and involve clever jokes and yeah. Also seems like a really nice guy, though he could have been especially nice to me considering I had seen DRS 10 times and he gets some royalties...but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
