For over 10 years, I've been attending musicals at this great school (and even saw a young Kelli O'Hara) and thought I'd share some thoughts about their recent musical.
OCU did a smash up version of "Guys And Dolls" this past weekend. This 90's revival version was directed with great skill by Broadway vet Bob Durkin and his skilled hand guided this outstanding show.
The ladies proved to be the winners of the cast. A true star-to-be was found in Renee Anderson as Adelaide. She belted out her "Lament" with gusto and charm. Nicole Wolfe as Sarah gave a thrilling rendition of "I've Never Been In Love Before" and her drunken "If I Were A Bell" was a delight.
The supporting characters almost ran away with the show. Roy Lightner (who was a doll as Horton last year) rocked the house with "Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat" and Dan Meagher, as Arvide, was a true delight and he avoided all the sacharine that usually comes with the character and delivered a moving "More I Can Not Wish You".
They were accompanied by a beautiful, swinging 30 piece orchestra (it looked like that many from the balcony). The dancing was fine, but the Hot Box girl's numbers were fabulous. The chicken costumes for "Peck" were amazing.
Oklahoma City University truly has one of the finest musical theater programs in the nation and it's exciting to spot the next Kristin in the bunch. I'm very interested in their production of "Pirates of Penzance" next month!
