re: Olivier Awards announced

I agree Marguerite should have been nominated, it wasnt perfect but it was good enough for a mention. I thought Alexander Hanson was pretty poor in Marguerite so surprised hes got a nom

I hope Zorro wins but sadly im sure the predictable result will be Jersey Boys

re: Olivier Awards announced

I've a feeling they may go for 'Zorro' as its a new English musical and for some reason that I still cant fathom there is a certain bias against the wonderful 'Jersey Boys'. 'Jersey Boys' fought against a lot of discrimination in the theatre world to go on to play to great houses and is just about to get its money back.
'Zorro' on the other hand is a fresh new British show with a lot riding on it and if it wins it could very well settle down for a 2 or 3 year run.
Saying that nobody thought 'Jersey Boys or 'Zorro' would still be here now!
I always said 'Jersey Boys' would do well in the West End and that 'Zorro' would surprise everyone.

re: Olivier Awards announced

I hope they do go for Zorro, its more original than Jersey Boys (eg: theres new music in there not just a back catalogue)plus it would just be great to see the little show everyone thought would flop prove everyone wrong. We do like the underdog in the uk!!

I would LOVE to see the man in the cape get it as much as I love 'Jersey Boys'

"it would just be great to see the little show everyone thought would flop prove everyone wrong."

Good point.

It would also send out a message to producers that doing original work can be artistically successful and commercially rewarding.

re: Olivier Awards announced

I don't think Marguerite was a perfect Production by any means, Ruthie Henshall's pitch was all over the place, but the score, story, design and other aspects which make a MUSICAL were brilliant. Since when has general word of mouth been the main criterion for garnering awards, exedore?
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

I'd give it the award for best design maybe.

re: Olivier Awards announced

The story may have been decent, but if they're not going to give the award to Dumas, then its decency has no bearing on Marguerite's overall quality.

The score was perfectly respectable, but I can't remember any of the tunes, and am unlikely to own the cast recording unless it drops below a fiver or turns up in my Christmas stocking one year.

The design, I'll grant you, was beautiful, and if it wins Best Set Design, I'll be only slightly miffed. But aside from that, the show never at all managed to rise above "good but not great".

re: Olivier Awards announced

The design for Marguerite was nice, but the Vienna production of Rebecca did the flying panel effect first and on a grander scale. As Weez and Mama pointed out, the score was lame and same-y throughout and Ruthie's performance inconsistent (not to mention her character utterly un-likeable.)

Now if they'd tried to rebuild the show around Armand and his sister? That may have actually been decent, but instead the side characters were more interesting than the leads.

re: Olivier Awards announced

Wow, I said exactly the same thing in my review of Marguerite!

Also, although the story may be good, its nothing new and has been done much better before (ie Moulin Rouge).

re: Olivier Awards announced

I can't believe that people are claiming that Marguerite should not be nominated for best musical, but thinking that it is ok for Jersey Boys to be nominated. Jersey Boys is an unoriginal Jukebox musical, with no depth or substance. At least Marguerite is a new musical that is fresh and relatively original.

re: Olivier Awards announced

I love Jersey Boys, and I love Zorro, so I don't mind who wins =) and I know people in both so I'm not biased to either haha
I didn't see Marguerite but I did also like Imagine This, and in the short amount of time it was on quite a lot of people loved it, I definitely heard more positive reports about IT than Marguerite.

Do I have terrible taste? =P

re: Olivier Awards announced

Marguerite is an adaptation from a novel so it's not as original as you seem to think.

JBoys is, despite its origins, remarkably well put together and a total crowd pleaser.

Fans of Marguerite, meanwhile, will get their next fix of angsty French opportunists should Mathilde ever find life in production.

re: Olivier Awards announced

I think that Sunset should win best company performance. They're combined actors and musicians, now thats teamwork! But I wouldn't complain if A: OC walked with it, what a show! :)

re: Olivier Awards announced

>>Only two runners for best new musical, underlines how much of a naff year 2008 was. <<

Well, it's gonna be the same for the Tonys here... 3 new musicals and 20 revivals going at it. Must be a worldwide epidemic
I once heard someone describe her (Ruthie Henshall) singing as sounding as though she's trying to swallow a whole meatball slightly larger than her windpipe. (The same person compared Michael Ball's singing to sounding as though he's sitting on a washing machine on spin cycle and Colm Wilkinson's to a man with a paralyzed lip trying to eat cottage cheese.) --- Schmerg_The_Impaler
