I'm reading On Golden Pond (a likeable play, though it's not really my favorite). How does the play differ from the movie (Is it still in print?)?

I know they built up the wife role for Katharine Hepburn when they made the movie and I think the daughter role is a bit larger as well.

It is a much better written film than it is as a play.

Of course, the entire play is set in the house - no scene in the boat with Norman and Billy, no Chelsea diving off the pier, etc.

Both the play and the film are exruciatingly mediocre. I've always marveled at their success. There is a fairly fine representation of the play, done for television a few years back.

Calling the film excruciatingly mediocre neglects the amazing work, lives and talent the three leads brought to the project. Yes, agreed, with Kate and the Fondas, it wouldn't be much, but with them it is magic.

The TV version of the play with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer was indeed the play script as written ... but they were never believable as the elderly couple of that script, even though they were the right ages.
