On the Twentieth Century

I'm still smiling from last night's concert. Anybody else? Douglas Sills was at his hammy best and Christopher Sieber was too, but Marin Mazzie soared. She rose to the challenge left by Madeline Kahn and Judy Kaye, like a singing Lucille Ball--every moment was genuinely funny.

But the night belonged to the demented JoAnne Worley, long whispered to be a great muscial comedy actress. By the time she ended "Repent!" by swinging her pearls around her neck, she had become a great Broadway star. What Broadway producer will make up for lost time and put her on Broadway, where she has always belonged?

Bravo to Seth and Co. for brining back the wonderfully funny show--and god bless Cy Coleman, Betty Comden and Adolph Green for writing such a fun and funny score.

This concert sounds fab (I saw the original production, did you PalJoey?) and have to tell you that I saw Worley in San Francisco years ago as Lucy in 'You're a Good Man Charlie Brown' and she was a tremendous force on stage.

Just my two cents...it was an unforgetable and amazing evening! Everything was top notch and the show itself is brillant! I couldn't help agreeing with Seth when he asked why it hasn't been revived on Broadway. Maybe this will give them some inspiration!

Yes, Glebb, I saw the original--with Judy Kaye--and memorized the OCR with Madeline Kahn. Marin Mazzie was even funnier in this than she was in Kiss Me, Kate.

Gypsy1527--did you see the original? Or did you come to the New Amsterdam fresh? My bf did--he'd never even heard the album--and he loved every minute of it.

I was there. I loved it.

Marin Mazzie was in top form. Her voice is a gift from God. I would really loved to see a full-fledged revival soon!

re: On the Twentieth Century

THis is an expensive show to mount. I'd love a revival, but I don't think it's likely, unless ROundabout wants to take it on.

Any hopes they'll record this cast?

re: On the Twentieth Century

Go, Marin!

I'm so glad she's finally doing the comic roles she was born to do. It's interesting how she initially made a name for herself in the city doing dramatic musical work. I thought she would never break out of that, but then along came "Kate."

I would love to see her join the cast of "Young Frankenstein." She could play the Garr part (although she's a little too old, but it depends on who's opposite her)... or the Kahn part (if something falls through with Chenoweth)... but I'd love to see her paste on some warts and tackle Frau Blucher (if Donna Murphy can't, won't, or goes AWOL!).

Marin would have us in stitches crying out, "He... was.. my.. BOYFRIEND!!!"

re: On the Twentieth Century

I love this show, there was a great Chicago dinner theater production about ten years ago. Love Marin - she was great as Aldonza.

re: On the Twentieth Century

I had never seen or heard the music before seeing it Monday night. I went because of Marin Cy Coleman and Comden and Green.

re: On the Twentieth Century

I remember this show so well and enjoyed it both times that I saw it. The first time with Madeline Kahn, who was good, and the second time with Judy Kaye, who was even better. And of course there were those great performances by Kevin Kline, Imogene Coca and John Cullum.

re: On the Twentieth Century

I had the great pleasure of working with Peter Flynn about ten years ago in a production of Sweeney Todd in which he played Anthony - he was excellent, and I am so glad to see he's involved in projects like this one (he directed). He is so frigging funny - and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

re: On the Twentieth Century

Was there any mention if there would be a cast album like there was for the special performance of HAIR?

re: On the Twentieth Century

HJAJtheFirst, I saw the CD for Hair on sale, but I don't see one for On the Twentieth Century.

I love the HAIR special performance cast album, which is why I was hoping they would do the same for On the Twentieth Century.
