On this very day in 534 BC Thespis of Acaria is said to have become the first person to act or appear in a play. Thespis is credited with creating the art form of acting and is known as the inventor of tragedy. He appeared as another character during a choral presentation. Up to this time all stories were told in the third story. Thespis was the first known person to become a different person. He is said to have used some sort of makeup and a mask thus creating the masks of theatre. This is where the word thespian came from. It is said that as a ghost Thespis has become mischievous and is known to cause trouble on performances every year on this date. He causes mishaps not only for theatre but for any performance wether on TV or a concert. So break a leg to all performances everywhere on this theatrical April Fool's Day.

Wow! I never knew this. This is such a great piece of theater history.
And more recently.....
It was 50 years ago today (Nov 23, 1959) that the musical FIORELLO opened on Broadway - the only musical (except for the recently closed Rent) to win a Pulitzer Prize and never get a Broadway revival.
