Despite how cliched the book is, I kinda enjoyed the show. Not what I would call great theatre, but I did like a number of the songs and watching Asa Somers perform is definately not a hardship. That said, I think a Broadway transfer is ridiculous. If it actually happens I would be very surprised.

It made "Brooklyn" look like "Meistersinger".

P.S. I still enjoyed "Brooklyn" and was board to pieces with this. A bunch of songs thrown at a (lame) story does not a musical make.

I work for Shubert who manages ticket sales for the Zipper and it is doing no business.

But the work waits! I'm alive at last, and I'm full of joy!!!

"Disney didn't invest too well in On The Record."

Sure they did. They tried it out on the road. It was a good idea poorly executed. Disney has been extremely wise trying out their material out of town before settling down on Broadway or the West End. The only exception was Hunchback of Notre Dame, which opened in a full sit-down production in Berlin. It was somewhat risky, but it paid off. What I believe put the show over the top in Berlin was opening the new Musik Theater in the chic new Potzdamer Platz (what was once the heart of Berlin, but completely destroyed and forgotten since WWII), which was part of the reconstruction of East Berlin featuring fantastic modern architecture and the production itself featured an innovative staging design that the Germans were extremely proud of.

I included a link to a decent website with lots of info and photos on the Berlin production of Hunchback for anyone interested.

ONCE AROUND THE SUN is one of the worst shows I've ever seen.

Really? I thought it was a "hit." why else would they transfer? Weird. I have a feeling that's why they didn't announce a quick Broadway transfer. Maybe they're re-working the book and score. I mean I would imagine they'd change a lot of it before putting it up on Broadway.

I honestly can't understand why it would transfer. As has been already stated, the reviews are all over the place. The show can't even sell out the tiny Zipper Theatre without papering services. There's no reason why it should transfer, especially since much better shows are struggling to find homes on Broadway.

Any word on this coming to Broadway? Or was this in fact a publicity stunt as Margo suggested?

Let's hope this was some sort of early April fools joke. Once Around... made Lennon seem like Medea. A complete catastrophe.

maybe it is getting heavily rewritten.

Margo suggested it, therefore it MUST be true.

Margo, that is EXACTLY what I said to myself. I have heard nothing but mediocre things about it, and I get invited to it a couple times a month (never being able to go). It doesn't sound like anything that would do well on Broadway, unless they TOTALLY rework it from what I understand.

Well, it is still listed as schedualed to move to Broadway on Maffei Productions Homepage.

http://www.maffeiproductions.com/

And I know it was always in talks for the move. Caren Lyn Manuel told me herself like last May that it was hoping for a Broadway transfer. So who knows?

Interesting. Thanks for that. Looks like it wasn't a rumor.

I don't think it was ever a rumor. I posted the thread, and I had a link from Playbill.com in it. But just because it wasn't a rumor in the first place doesn't mean it's still going to happen... I mean, this was months ago.

My take on it is this: it was never a publicity stunt, but when the show was yanked from the Zipper, the interest died off, but that doesn't mean the plans were ever halted. It is definitely looking to have a Broadway run and the book has already been completely rewritten. Which is a good thing.

Good point, Emcee. Rumor was a bad word choice in my post. I was meaning along the lines of a publicity stunt. I know it was announced last year that it was coming to Broadway, but something about it then seemed a little odd since it was discounting and not even selling out in an off-broadway house.

Well, I didn't mean it was definatly going to happen. I just meant I don't think it was a publicity stunt. I was surprised when they made the announcment after it didn't seem to even take off.. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
