re: Once Upon A Mattress with SJP

I have to say, I saw her in Mattress, and I was highly impressed by her voice. It was semi-raspy - but I love those kind of voices. After the show, i met her and told her she had a wonderful voice, and she bowed to me, while shaking my hand. I forever love Sarah, thanks to that moment.
As for her in the show, I wasn't crazy about the show itself, but I thought she did a great job.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

The part of Fred is a huge joke. It would destroy all the humor if whoever plays the part could actually sing.

yeah she sang a little more than she does on the gap commercial. but in mattress she's playing a character role. it doesn't exactly require a legit voice.

re: Once Upon A Mattress with SJP

I'm usually a fan of revival CD's - I've found most to be better and more "fresh" than the original. However, "Mattress" is the only show that I'd rather hear the original cast (with Carol Burnett) recording of, over the revival. I'll be very interested to see the made-for-television version of "Mattress" coming out this year with Tracey Ullman and Carol Burnett as the Queen. It sounds quite delightful, and anything Carol does is absolutely fantastic.

i saw it..it hurt..it was truely one of the worst things i have ever seen. she is not a strong actress or singer on stage.

In the song called something like "I'm in Love with a girl named Fred" SJP used this "scat/doo-wop" thing for her part. Well at college did Mattress this fall and our Winnifred didn't do that. How is it written??????

Fred should not be an operatic or classically trained singer, but should still have a powerful belt and a sense of melody.

the part in "Song of Love (A Girl Named Fred)" is written as it is heard on the OBC with Carol Burnett--the "ah-ah-ah"s. no scat.
"It's not for sissies, contrary to popular belief." - Tommy Tune, on musical theatre.
