Its not a demotion. If you look at it, swings are the understudies for everyone. One day, Karmine could be in for Mark's Mom, the next, Maureen. That night, she could be Mimi. Granted, this is somewhat unlikely, but still. Moving from a lead to a swing is hardly a demotion. Sure, you won't get the recognition of being the lead, but being a swing is more challenging.

I didn't mean it as an insult to swings, that wasn't my intention. I first wrote that she was leaving, but since she isn't actually leaving the show, I changed it. I used "demoted" for lack of a better term.

I love Ava's singing voice. If anyone scream/sings it's Kelly Karbacz. After seeing her a couple times, I really grew to absolutely dislike her singing style and portrayal of Maureen. I like Ava a lot more and can't say I'm going to miss Kelly at all.

i saw rent two weeks ago and all i can say is that destan owens is amazing!!!!
the chills i got from icy reprise were so intense his voice is absolutely beautiful.

loved most of them. cary is amazing, matt... well, he's a little bored. but he's funny for the most part. karmine is just... wow. no words. she's really good. destan... like others, i'd rather see marcus as collins, but destan is okay. justin is freakin awesome as angel. merle is good, i'm just not a joanne fan. kelly was great, but ava is too. d'monroe is excellent. and the company is really good as well... enrico is hilarious, and of course, there's marcus, so he makes it all better.

Out of the current cast, my favorites are:

Cary: Sexy as hell and such an amazing voice. His One Song Glory gives me goosebumps.

Matt: Has been Mark for so long he can do the show in his sleep. He is really good but at times can be kind of obnoxious. Good physical comedy.

Karmine: My favorite Mimi. Although she is going back to swing or understudy for Mimi and Maureen and Antonique Smith is taking over as Mimi. I forget Antonique's start date. I have only seen her Maureen but I hear her Mimi is good.

Justin: My second favorite Angel (next to Jai). Great dancer

theaterfan, you and me...i think destan is amazing. I don't know why but Marcus just didn't do it for me. Destan's voice overpowers the microphone; he just doesn't need it, esp. in the reprise of ICY.

I saw Dominique Roy as Mimi. Amazing!

Cary Shields is so sexy, but he and Matt kept on cracking each other up even when they weren't supposed to. Matt...needs to move on. I think he's great; I just wish he'd focus on acting.

For some reason when I saw it last Tuesday, the energy was very high. (It's been very unreliable the last times I've gone to see Rent). It was great to see everyone really energetic for once. Ava~ I love her! So much better than Kelly Karbacz. Ava has such a great voice, definitely a belter but not a screamer, and looks like what I imagine Maureen to look like :)

Does anyone know how long Matt/Cary are staying? I'm back in NY in Decemeber and was just wondering if they'll still be in (I'm guessing yes but just checking)

Cary told me his contract is ending in January (18? I think?) and he told me he hopes that something else comes along; I think he's "tired" of his role as Roger. Althugh he was quick to say that he loves the role of Roger, I get the feeling that he needs a bit of a change.

I've never seen Matt, but i have heard him, his voice, actually not bad. But i did see Andy Meeks, who had the most character out of every actor on the stage he was amazing.

What is the lottery situation for Rent nowadays? I haven't seen it in a while but last the last time I did, the lottery was pretty empty.
