i just caught this on IFC last night and my question is, how in the world can anyone musicalize this? it's a great movie but i can't see it on stage.

I saw it last year and it just didn't work. The main character is so far from likeable that it's hard to muster any real feelings for her. It's best left as a movie.
Oh I don't know, in the movie I was highly entertained by what a ruthless bitch she was. So I'd probably enjoy the musical of it. Plus I loved the character of Lucia.
I know some people who liked it in SF last year, but the basic consensus was that it wasn't a show that would right for Broadway audiences. Last I heared it was looking at Dodger Stages Off Broadway, which is probably a better choice, though it's hard to imagine this show becoming much more than a cult hit.

All I know about it was Kerry Butler was the lead, and I love Kerry Butler. I've only heard one song, and it was very "eh, okay"...
here's a clip of it from kerry's website.

ok i'm sure I'll be flamed for this, but who cares:
you saw it last year and didn't like it singing?? there were two theatres on the top floor where the Magic Theatre is, did you step in the wrong one? While I do admit the bias of being a KB fan, the notion that she was far from likeable is laughable. Her chemistry and timing for the part were perfect and the audinces I was part of both times I saw it seemed to like her also.
I do concede that in a big broadway theatre, that might not translate well to the upper mezzanines, but put it in a more intimate setting (off-bway maybe to start and see how it goes) and it will easily draw more than cult fans. Very good show, great cast top to bottom.
I'm not exactly sure what the "right show" for Broadway means given the mix of shows we've seen over the last few years. But if I had $8 million to spare I'd finance it.
It's being done at Williamstown this summer.
We want David Burtka back on Broadway, a la The Play About The Baby!
Wicked_Fan I love that clip of Kerry singing "If we use protection then we won't get burned" hehe
