Original Phantom Cast Album and the Flag#1

I'm drawing a complete blank here...someone refresh my middle aged memory...

Back when the Original cast album to Phantom of the Opera was released, circa December 1987 and forward (I'm basing this on when my local record store got it in), some second edition printed record plant versions of it had an American Flag printed on the top right corner of the cassette tape cover. Can anyone remember why they did this? Well before the age of CD lifting and illegal file sharing, I seem to recall that this was the RUG's way of informing people that they were getting a legit copy, though some people thought it was an American Cast album with the three leads reprising their roles.
