After seeing Chita's show on Friday, I was compelled to wonder what the original set of Chicago looked like. The only footage I have seen of the Orignal Broadway Production was a Jerry Orbach TOny performance and Chita and Gwen's Hot Honey Rag performance. If anyone could give any insight to how the set looked, I'd be most grateful!

Have you see Fosse's film ALL THAT JAZZ? If not you should rent it. There's a nice shot of Tony Walton's original set model for CHICAGO. Roy Scheider is showing it to his "cast" on their first day of rehearsal.

The band was on the top level, atop a drum shaped platform with starways on either side. The "drum" opened up to reveal different sets. Behind the band were huge neon signs against the back wall "CHICAGO - LATE 1920'S" at the opening, "ROXIE HART" for her number, etc.
For Cell Block Tango, each girl held a section of jail bars - sort of like a ladder with missing rungs. When they were lined up, it looked like one continuous wall of bars, but during the number they could seperate and move about, dancing with their own section of bars.
Thanks so much! I think I have a good idea now of the original production set.
