Actually it WAS made into a musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt (the folks also behind "I Do, I Do!" and "The Fantasticks", among others). It's called "Grover's Corners".
Jones and Schmidt of the Fantasticks were working on a musical version, but they eventually lost the rights.
There was also a television production of a different musical adaptation, which starred Frank Sinatra.
Mandelbaum has an article which should answer most of your questions.

Im guessing it wasnt a hit...I was recently in our town...it was so depressing. "gid ap Bessie" (I played Howie)
I saw Seattle's INTIMAN Theatre production with Tom Skerritt (he was out the day I saw it, his understudy was amazing), and it was a brilliant show. Celia Keenan-Bolger (now in Spelling Be Off-Broadway) was Emily and she was astounding. It was an interesting (and valid) point that Mendelbaum made about the play being too lyrical for there to be any songs put in place of his words. Has anyone thought of composing the piece using the lines from the actual play? That might be interesting...
