PIPPIN DVD Missing Songs???

I just recently watched the Pippin DVD and there was stuff missing and new dialogue here and there

Catherine's first song "There He Was" wasn't there but dialogue in it's place.

"I Guess I'll Miss the Man" a favorite was completely cut!! but "Love Song" was still there...?

Also Pippin's full "Soliloquy" at the end was cut into one section.

And I think I missed it, but the part about Theo's duck dying isn't in there either!

I'm wondering if when it was performed it was in its entirety and then they edited it for television, or was it completely cut out to begin with, OR was the DVD version edited and the VHS has the entire show? I'm confused, and you might be too!

re: PIPPIN DVD Missing Songs???

the dvd is the same as the vhs version...

as for whether it was cut live - I don't believe so.. I think they just cut it from the video. I love pippin, but that recording is one of the "how not to" film a musical.

I think, thus far, the best direction/capturing of a live musical on film is Sweeney Todd....

re: PIPPIN DVD Missing Songs???

Is this a live version of it or is it made into a movie? Because when musicals are made into movies they usually cut a few songs and paste some of the songs into different spots. But if it was a taping of the actual show, I have no idea why so many things would be misplaced and changed.

The producer of the taping was cheap. I forget the specifics, but he wanted it edited to keep it in a certain time frame. This, of course, upset everyone involved in the production, including the producer, Stuart Ostrow.

The entire performance was recorded and a Fosse edit of the entire musical exists.....somewhere.

I would KILL to see THAT version!

It's one of the worst edit jobs in history. Pippin goes from sitting by the headboard to sitting at the foot of the bed in less than a second. Much of the Domestic sequence is gone as is the first half of Pippin as king, despite the fact that they refer back to what was said in that section.

As for the "extra" dialogue. Bob Fosse made numerous changes to the script during the original production and went so far as to kick the author out of rehearsals to keep him from complaining. The script as issued now stands as the author's wished it. Though illegal, many people add back the Fosse lines.

yeah i did the show before and was totally confused at the differences..at one point during rehersals i launched into the third verse of "Extraordinary" becuase I was so used to hearing it that way in the movie. It seemed at the time like a totally different story. I thougth I liked the movie version better..I think now that I dont really like either versions.
