My love for theatre began in 1978 when, as a VERY young 15 year old Alto sax player, my band director asked if I wanted to learn clarinet and play in an orchestra for a community theater musical. It was MAME and WOW....that's a LOT of notes. LOL!
So I learned clarinet, not hard except for that BREAK which no sax has, and played Book 2 with Alto sax, clarinet and bass clarinet.....optional flute which I am just about to FINALLY learn at age 54.
If you want to play in a pit as a woodwind player, learn ALL of them very well and OWN all of the horns as well.
As for me, after decades as an actor, I'm gonna start over. I'm learning flute as well and trying to find a bass clarinet that doesn't cost too much (difficult to do) and start playing community theater pits. Because the ART is what's fun! As in many artistic endeavors....don't plan on money. Do it for the love of the art.
TRUST ME...almost nothing is as satisfying as sitting in a pit surrounded by your horns and kicking butt as you switch from one to another as you play your heart out.
